ARTISTA CENTROITALIANO DEL XVI SECOLO. The deposition of Christ . Inscription in the lower right:* “VERE LANGUORES NOSTROS IPSE TULIT”. Reference literature: V. Daniele, Prospero Fontana ‘pictor bononiensis’ (1509-1597): catalogo ragionato dei dipinti, Roma 2022, tav. 63, p. 148. The work depicts the episode of the Entombment in a grand compositional setting, with Christ placed at the center of the scene, supported by mourners in a tightly woven arrangement brimming with emotional intensity. The pallor of his body contrasts with the vibrant, saturated colors of the surrounding figures' garments, such as deep reds and greens, lending depth and relief to the entire representation. The style, arrangement, and treatment of the figures, along with clear references to antiquity, evoke the rich cultural atmosphere of Central Italian Mannerism and may suggest an influence from Prospero Fontana or one of his followers. Fontana, a renowned painter of the Emilian school active in the 16th century, was a master of a Mannerism that emphasized pathos and psychological complexity, especially in sacred scenes. This is evident in works like the Burial of Christ, now housed in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna (inv. 539). In this painting, we find some of the characteristic elements of his style: from the use of vivid, vibrant colors to the masterful chiaroscuro that shapes the figures, and the expressively incisive portrayal of faces, revealing a wide range of emotions and making the collective grief palpable. In particular, the figure in red on the right, probably Joseph of Arimathea, recalls typical models of Fontana and seems to direct the viewer’s gaze toward the physical and emotional center of the scene, the body of Christ.. 150 x 170 cm.

Catalogo Ragionato dei dipinti e dei disegni, Milano 1997, tav. 133, p.112 "La tavoletta, curiosamente descritta da Giolli come dipinto "su una tavolozza" e dallo stesso datata al 1888, sembra uno studio per il dipinto precedente (cfr. Il cappello di paglia): identici, infatti, appaiono i caratteri somatici del viso, i capelli e il berretto. Rari e di fondamentale importanza sono gli "schizzi" che, come questo, riflettono le fasi iniziali dell'approccio ranzoniano alla rappresentazione di un volto. L'opera è dunque testimonianza pressoché unica e insostituibile sul metodo seguito dall'artista per impadronirsi del personaggio da ritrarre. La gestualità con cui il colore è buttato sulla tavola, con la spatola, con le dita, con le pennellate nervosamente vibrate e poi raschiate, rivela quella potenza espressionistica e quella passione a stento controllata che sottende la ritrattistica ranzoniana e che, spesso purtroppo, l'opera finita non possiede più. Di difficile datazione, proprio per la sua unicità (l'incuria deve aver distrutto altri simili esempi), lo "schizzo" va riferito al biennio 1872-73, per il citato collegarsi del dipinto precedente (cfr.
