      US M1840 "wristbreaker" cavalry saber stamped " C&J " ( Clement & Jung - Solingen ). Brass twisted wire still present but leather is missing. Steel scabbard with very light oxidation that has never been cleaned. good - very good.

Period marbled boards, paper spine label. Two brief library stamps to title, two leaves with corners restored, binding with some general wear, top joint partially cracked. First edition. "Vincendon-Dumoulin was hydrographer aboard the Astrolabe under Dumont d'Urville during the voyage of 1837-40, and here collects historical, navigational, and other information relating to the Marquesas ... There is a long chapter on the social life and customs of the inhabitants of the islands. Contemporary ethnological science is represented by the 'Notice phrénologique et éthnologique sur les naturels de l'archipel Nouka-Hiva', by Dumoutier" (Hill 1777).

Very occasional light spotting, lightly rubbed, rebacked to match. First edition, presentation copy inscribed to "The Rev. C.S. Henry. With the respects of the author. March 1846." The first collection of Moore's poems to include 'A Visit from St. Nicholas'—his celebrated poem more popularly known by its first line, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.' In the introduction, Moore addresses his children, and asks them to "look upon [this book] as a token of the affection of your father." BAL 14348; Grolier American 52. Provenance: Rev. C.S. Presentation copy, a fine New York association, inscribed on the half-title: "To | Miss Julia Rhinelander | With the respects | of the author. | Augt 11, 1849." Julia Rhinelander was the daughter of the prominent and wealthy New York scion, William C. Rhinelander.

Wolff, [1842] Broadside (16 1/8 x 9 3/4 in.; 410 x 248 mm), text printed in blue, red border of ivy entwined about a stylized interlocking branches within a blue double-ruled border; sides and top margin a bit chipped. Red morocco portfolio lined in green moiré, upper cover lettered gilt. LITERATURE BAL 14346; Grolier/Elliott 54; Marshall 25 NOTE The first separate printing of "The Night Before Christmas" crediting Moore as the author. The only known previous separate printing is cited as one by Myron King, a broadside printed in Troy, New York, about 1830, but this was unlocated by BAL, citing only a catalogue entry. Wollf's broadside was issued as a "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" greeting.
