      THREE NAVAL DOCUMENTS 20th Century 1) U.S. Naval Academy diploma awarded to Francis Edward Clark. Dated June 3, 1937. Signed by assorted Academy staff and affixed with seal. Text flanked by assorted maritime and patriotic vignettes including Neptune riding a seahorse-drawn chariot, eagles, a midshipman holding a sextant, etc. 24.5" x 18.5". 2) Souvenir "Taufschein" (Baptismal Certificate) issued by the Hamburg-America Line to passengers crossing the equator. Dated December 11, 1909. In German translated to "We, Poseidon the only, Son of Chronos, Prince Trident, lawful ruler of the violet-blue high seas, ... have most graciously permitted the earth born Frau Francis E. Clark, on board of our friendly Hamburg-American Liner 'Cleveland' to pass carefully over our equator...". Pre-printed text with handwritten and stamped names and dates. Text surrounded by a polychrome image of Poseidon, seahorses and a distant ship. Framed 17" x 11.75". 3) "Royal Order of the Blue Nose" certificate issued to Francis E. Clark for crossing the Arctic Circle on June 24, 1952 while serving aboard the U.S.S. Shadwell. Signed by Rear Admiral L.J. Huffman. Certificate with polychrome images of the ship, polar bears, walruses and coastal maps. Framed with a blue and white textile depicting a polar bear. Framed 24" x 16.5".

Clark is best known for her photographs, photo etchings, and installations that combine her personal experiences with shared experiences of African-Americans in the United States and Canada. Text is an important element in her work as it reflects various sources of inspiration, from stories of people she has met along the way to graffiti from several cities. Her images convey “the hopes and disappointments of an individual and a race, and the resiliency of the human spirit.”Estimate: $2,000–2,200
