BIBLE, in English. - The Pictorial New Testament (Pocket Edition) with pictures specially drawn in Palestine for the Scripture Gift Mission by James Clark... and H.A. Harper. London: The Oxford University Press for the Scripture Gift Mission, [no date but circa 1914]. 16o (11.4 x 7.4cm.). Coloured plates, 4pp. insert from the 'British & Foreign Sailors' Society' bound at front. Original cloth (worn, covers somewhat warped). PROVENANCE: Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) (presentation inscription at front, signed 'Sir George Reid High Cm. Australia' to 'the Good Ship Endurance/God be with you till we meet/again'), and thence by descent. IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. Sir George Houstoun Reid (1845-1918) served as the first high commissioner of the Commonwealth in London from 1910 to 1915. The book's small size, the inscription and its condition all suggest that it may well have travelled with Shackleton on the Endurance and subsequently to Elephant Island and on the James Caird. [ With :] Albert S. HULLAH. The Presence. London: the Epworth press, October 1928. 16o (13.2 x 10cm.). Original gilt paper wrappers. Provenance : Shackleton family and by descent. Second edition of a work that was originally a script for a broadcast made from London by the BBC on 5 February 1928. Essentially a sermon, the first five paragraphs relate the story of Shackleton and Worsley both feeling the presence of a fourth person during their climb over the centre of South Georgia. [ And :] Elspeth J. BOOG WATSON. Shackleton in the Antarctic. London, New York & Toronto: Richard Clay & Co. Ltd. for the Oxford Univeristy Press, 1943. Small 8o (18.4 x 12.3cm.). Frontispiece, one full-page illustration and one full-page map. Original thin card wrappers, printed in three colours. Provenance : Shackleton family and thence by descent. A fine copy of this rare ephemeral item. Issued under the general series title of 'Great Exploits', this work concentrates on the story of the Endurance expedition. Not in Conrad; Spence 1244. (3).
