Coloured plates, 4pp. insert from the 'British & Foreign Sailors' Society' bound at front. Original cloth (worn, covers somewhat warped). PROVENANCE: Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922) (presentation inscription at front, signed 'Sir George Reid High Cm. Australia' to 'the Good Ship Endurance/God be with you till we meet/again'), and thence by descent. IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. Sir George Houstoun Reid (1845-1918) served as the first high commissioner of the Commonwealth in London from 1910 to 1915. The book's small size, the inscription and its condition all suggest that it may well have travelled with Shackleton on the Endurance and subsequently to Elephant Island and on the James Caird. Second edition of a work that was originally a script for a broadcast made from London by the BBC on 5 February 1928. Essentially a sermon, the first five paragraphs relate the story of Shackleton and Worsley both feeling the presence of a fourth person during their climb over the centre of South Georgia.
