Chase lower right, "A Windy Day" / Coast of Holland inscribed verso, below signature inscribed "Scheveningen 1879", framed behind glass in handsome gilt frame, not examined out of frame, wear consistent with age including some craquelure, etc., ss: 19 5/8" h. x 35 5/8" w. [This piece was painted in Scheveningen sometime between March 1879 and October 1879, while Harry Chase was studying under Mesdag. A solo show and auction of Chase's works was held on March 23, 1880 at Pettes & Leathe in St. Louis, MO. An illustrated catalog was created by Chase, with pen & ink sketches of six selected works, including "A Windy Day -- Coast of Holland", which was listed as entry No. 50 in the catalogue. It sold for $137.50, purchased by Marc S. Holmes of St. Louis. Marc and his wife moved to Chicago in the 1890s, and presumably took the paintings with them there. It was also part of a special auction which included forty works by Chase sold in St. Louis auction November 21, 1876 to a Mr. Benjamin Harmon Brownell, a noted collector in that region. A photocopy of the 1876 newspaper covering the auction will be included in this lot. Oil on canvas. Housed in its original magnificent gilt frame with minor losses.       Harry (Henry) Chase, (American 1853-1889) "The Day's Catch", shore scene with fishing boats offloading their catch to fisherfolk on shore under an unsettled sky, oil on canvas, signed in pencil on stretcher "H. Chase". In a contemporary carved and gilt frame bearing New York City frame maker's label and ownership labels for Miss E.R. Clark and Mr. Alfred Jones. Framed size: 25 1/2" high, 39 1/2" wide. Sight size: 15 3/4" high, 29 1/2" wide. Provenance: Estate of Alfred Jones Born in Woodstock, Vermont in 1853, Harry Chase was drawn from the start to marine painting. While studying art in Munich, he completed scenes on the North Sea coast of Denmark. After a brief stint in Saint Louis, he returned to Europe, painting the French coast while working for two years in France. He also spent three years in Holland, primarily in the Hague, where he studied with Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Chase became one of the major American proponents of the Hague School of Dutch Impressionist painters before returning to Saint Louis in 1879. Soon after, Chase moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts and eventually to New York City. Chase died at the untimely age of 36,

They have survived a fierce storm which is breaking up with a patch of blue sky & sunlight lighting the central part of the scene. Signed lower left and dated "1881".
