          The first German edition of the famous English riding school with a parallel French text on the page in two columns. Monumental printed tables mostly with appropriate equestrian content, as well as portraits of the author on horseback or horse bridles engraved according to the designs of Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-1675), master of the Flemish school, Rubens' assistant. Large two-sheet boards with the text at the top, a total format of 32 x 38 cm and larger, are often presented and offered as free graphics for their individual attractiveness. Here in rich quality prints with wide edges, folds without damage. William Cavendish (1592-1676), First Duke of Newcastle, English military leader, member of the House, writer and poet. As a wealthy enlightened courtier of James I and Charles I and a Cambridge graduate, he was a supporter of science and art, and since 1650 a bearer of the Garter Order.           Two German double-page copper plate engravings of equestrian scenes, from Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux, whose three editions were published in 1658, 1737, and 1743. The illustrations depict equestrian training techniques developed by William Cavendish (1592-1676), the expatriated Duke of Newcastle who opened a riding school in Antwerp. Engravers Johann Ziegers and Georg Lehmanns, Nuremburg. Each engraving is well presented in a burled frame with gilt edges. The images measure 10 1/2" x 14" and 10 1/2" x 13 1/4", respectively, and each frame measures 22" x 24 1/4". Provenance: The Webster House collection.

Frontespizio figurato inciso in rame su doppia pagina, 8 illustrazioni in rame nel testo, 81 tavole numerate 2-82, di cui 17 a piena pagina e 64 su doppia pagina. In totale 82 tavole incise in rame fuori testo. Tracce d'uso alla legatura, internamente qualche piccolo difetto, restauro su tre tavole, buon esemplare. Bella edizione tedesca a cura di von Pernauer di questa celebre opera dedicata all'addestramento del cavallo con più tavole rispetto all'edizione originale francese. Vente: Une même version du frontispice de plus petite dimension (43.4x29.2 cm) a été vendu à Christie's Londres, vente 6723, 4 juin 2003, lot 114. Documentation: Concernant l'ouvrage, l'édition originale a été publiée à Anvers par Jacques van Meurs en1657 sous les yeux de l'auteur, pendant son exil, dont il passa une grande partie à Anvers. Elle est très recherchée par rapport aux 42 belles estampes (non compris le frontispice gravé) dont elle contient les premières épreuves: les exemplaires s'en trouvent fort difficilement, parce qu'une partie de l'édition a été brûlée dans le magasin du libraire. Le titre imprimé, daté de M. DC. LVII, ou de M. DC. LVIII, lorsqu'on a ajouté un I avec la plume, manque dans plusieurs exemplaires, qui, pour lors, n'ont que le frontispice gravé ainsi conçu: La Méthode nouvelle et invention extraordinaire de dresser les chevaux. Dans la seconde édition de 1737 par Jean Brindley à Londres, on y trouve les mêmes estampes et jusqu'au frontispice gravé, daté de 1658. (Source: Manuel du libraire par J.C Brunet, Paris, p. 1699). Conditions: Marge du bas coupée, déchirure de la marge b. g. et légèrement sur les marges du côté droit, quelques trous dues aux vers dans la gravure et particulièrement en haut au centre, petite déchirure au niveau de la pliure b. centre, légère coloration rouge au niveau des marges et petite tâche b. g.
