Item Overview

Description

This extravagant horse engraving is from William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle's Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser Les Chevaux (A New Method and Extraordinary Invention to Dress Horses) and/or A General System of Horsemanship in All its Branches. The work was published in different editions between 1667 and 1743 in Amsterdam and London. It is considered one of the finest works on dressage ever published.

Cavendish was a British aristocrat, politician, playwright, swordsman, and horse expert. He was close to some great men of his time, including the philosophers Hobbes and Descartes.

The engravings are after Abraham van Diepenbeeck, a successful Flemish painter. King Charles I brough him to England, and Cavendish commissioned him for a series of paintings on horsemanship. Diepenbeeck was a student of Peter Paul Rubens.
