PEDRO DE CAMPROBIN Almagro, Ciudad Real (1605) / Seville (1674) "Still Life", c. 1660

      Est: €48,000 - €64,000

Oil on canvas. Origin: Madrid, Granados Collection; Particular collection. Bibliography: Del Campo, J. and Palencia, JM, The splendor of the Andalusian baroque. Granados Collection, Cordoba, Caja Sur Foundation, 2007-2008, Seville, Hospital de la Caridad, 2008, pp. 66-67. Pedro de Camprobin is one of the main representatives of still life painting in the city of Seville, although his training took place in Toledo with the painter Luis Tristan. His work evolved from a naturalism with a strong tenebrist imprint, as demonstrated by the Still Life preserved in the Meadows Museum in Dallas, towards a much more personal style in which the influence of local tradition is evident, exemplified by the works of Juan de Zurbaran, creating a type of elegant, austere and expressive still life. His paintings tended towards sober and reduced color palettes, often featuring some elements typical of flamenco art such as the presence of butterflies and insects. The painting presented here, which once belonged to the Granados collection, is a good example of the sobriety that characterizes his still lifes. On a table we found a crystal glass, a bunch of radishes, cheese, a bottle of wine, some peaches and a loaf of bread arranged. The masterful modeling of these objects, built through a subtle gradation of light, allows him to capture their different material textures such as the transparency of glass or the velvety surface of fruits. The same qualities and models that we observe in the present painting, such as the cup and the peaches, can be found in other works by Camprobin such as in the Basket with Peaches and Plums in the Prado Museum (P007916). Also the same bottle, although turned upside down. In a different way, we find it in a Still Life, formerly in the Raleigh, North Carolina Museum of Art, and in two other compositions of his dated 1663 that were in a private collection in London and later passed to Switzerland. Also, in the distribution of elements of its composition and in the qualities of some objects such as the cheese, the glass cup or the loaf of bread, it presents a very close formal parallel with a Kitchen Still Life, of identical measurements, which was in a private collection from Madrid and which a few months ago was acquired to form part of the collections of the Prado Museum. Measurements: 80.5 x 102.5 cm.

PEDRO DE CAMPROBÍN PASSANO (Almagro, Ciudad Real, 1605 - Seville, 1674). "Floreros". Pair of oil paintings on canvas. Re-tinted. It presents restorations.

      Est: €75,000 - €80,000

PEDRO DE CAMPROBÍN PASSANO (Almagro, Ciudad Real, 1605 - Seville, 1674). "Floreros". Pair of oil paintings on canvas. Re-tinted. It presents restorations. Measurements: 72 x 52 cm; 83 x 63 cm (frame). In this pair of baroque vases we observe concomitances with a good number of flower paintings by Pedro de Camprobín, being this the genre in which he specialised and perfected to the highest degree. The use of petals falling on the table and the chromatic contrast between the colourful palette of flowers and the greyish, silver-coloured landscape enveloped in lyrical light were characteristic of his work. Likewise, he was also accustomed to treating the gleams of the metallic vases and the glazes of the corollas with skill, aspects that have been worked on with great care here. Sunflowers, lilies, roses, carnations... each floral species is imbued with its own character, while at the same time it dialogues with the rest to form fragrant and attractive bouquets. The skilful handling of the light manages to give volume to the fluffiest corollas, as if they wanted to break the two-dimensionality of the painting. The reds and pinks, ochres and ivory-whites on the green stems harmonise with the silver vase, whose silvery glints echo the greyish tones of the mysterious landscape. The flowers are of a distinctly baroque type, very open and exuberant, at their peak of maturity, even on the point of withering, to emphasise the idea of the fleeting nature of beauty and life. Both works are notable for the quality and subtlety of their forms, with petals laminated and superimposed to achieve thick effects. In one of the paintings, a butterfly approaches one of the lilies. This brings instantaneity to the work, so that the timeless patina of the whole combines with the instant and the anecdotal, and can also be interpreted as an added emphasis (along with the fallen petals) on the "tempus fugit". We can guess that this is a work of maturity, partly because he was accustomed to placing the flowers against a landscape background in his later, more accomplished works. He was the son of a silversmith from Almagro and his wife of Genoese origin, a descendant of the Peroli brothers, Genoese painters. At the age of fourteen he entered Luis Tristán's workshop in Toledo but was not heard from again until 1630 when, having settled in Seville, he passed the examination for admission to the painters' guild, for which he had Alonso Cano as his guarantor. Alfonso Pérez Sánchez assumes that he had previously completed his training in Madrid in contact with Juan van der Hamen, as his works are influenced by him. In 1632 he signed the "Repentant Magdalene" for the church of the Divino Salvador in Seville, the only known religious work by him, which clearly shows the influence of Zurbarán. His earliest known still lifes date from around 1650, having been executed after the plague epidemic that devastated Seville in 1649. In 1660 Camprobín took part in the founding of the city's Academy of Drawing and Painting, with which he collaborated until his death. He is known for still lifes such as the Still Life with Dead Birds in Dallas (Meadows Museum), signed in 1653, with a staggered composition similar to those used by Van der Hamen, and the Basket with Peaches and Plums, now in the Museo del Prado in 2006. His true speciality, however, was flower painting, and many of his works of this genre have survived, many of them in private collections. Camprobín always displayed a delicate sense of colour and a remarkable precision in his drawing.
