      Thomas Campbell Watercolor Landscape w/ Cattle

      This lot features an original watercolor landscape with cattle by Thomas Campbell (British-American 1834 - 1914).Campbell came to Tennessee in 1893 for his wife's health, but she died shortly there after. Having decided that he was too old to hold a pastorate, Campbell determined to becoming an artist. He had kept a sketch book since at least 1853 and recorded scenes of his travels. He taught art at Maryville College in 1893-94 although there was no art department. He then spent two years in Europe visiting Rome, Paris, England and Scotland. In 1902 he founded the art department at Maryville College and headed it unti his death in 1914. Signed "T. Campbell" lower left register. Measures in frame 17.5" x 25.25".       Two Thomas Campbell (Tennessee, 1834-1914), paintings of European figures. 1st item: Oil on canvas of a figure study of a young girl holding a pad with pencil sketch of a building at top left. Unsigned. Heavily carved gilt frame. Good condition with one small scratch on girl's skirt. Sight: 13 1/2" h x 10 1/2: W, Framed: 22 3/4" H x 20" W. 2nd item: Watercolor on board of a group of women washing clothes in city fountain. Signed in pencil at lower left, "At Siena, Sat'y, 30 Mar '95". Good condition. Plain black frame. Sight: 4 3/4" H x 8 1/4" W, Framed: 9" H x 12" W.       Three paintings by Thomas Campbell (Tennessee, 1834-1914). 1st item: Oil on canvas of a harbor scene with fishermen and sailboats at wharf and buildings in background. Canvas has some paint loss and a diagonal crease along left top corner. Gold frame with molded leaf design. Unsigned. Sight: 7 1/2" H x 10" W, Framed: 12 3/4" H x 14" W. 2nd item: Oil on board of wooden boat anchored in water, signed "T. Campbell" lower left. Name of Campbell relative, Blanche Bamberg, in pencil on reverse. Losses to piece at top right corner, left top center, left top corner. 7" H x 10" W unframed. 3rd item: Watercolor of Venice with gondolas in foreground and San Giorgio Maggiore and palazzos in background, signed "T.C." lower right corner. Foxing scattered throughout and along border. Plain black frame. Sight 2 3/4" H x 7 1/2" W, Framed 8"Hx12"W. Good condition with one small scratch at left corner. Sight: 4 1/2" H x 8 1/4" L, Framed: 8 1/4" H x 12" L. 2nd item: Oil on board of panoramic mountain lake scene in pastel colors. Unsigned. Dirt beneath mat and minor scratches. Sight: 3" H x 9 1/4" W, Framed: 7 1/4" H x 13 1/4" H. Both with later giltwood frames.       TN mountain stream landscape oil on board by Thomas Campbell (Tennessee 1834-1914) in carved gilt frame, signed lower right, "Thomas Campbell". Overall very good condition with three very small black spots in upper left tree leaves area indicating possible touch-up. Minor losses to frame edge. Appears to retain the original frame. Sight - 13 1/2" x 9 1/2" W. Framed - 24 1/2" H x 20" W.
