      GREAT MILLARD SHEETS RELATED TAOS PAINTINGS C. 1932. Comprising six original watercolors circa 1932 by American artist Marjorie Dunn Campbell (1910-1998). Including a large double sided watercolor depicting Taos landscapes 22 inches x 30 inches (illustrated). Together with a lovely Provincetown dock scene, signed lower left (14 inches x 20 inches) as well as a Cape Cod scene, 12 inches x 16 inches, another Cape Cod scene with tree and houses, 20 inches x 18 inches, and an exotic nighttime dance scene signed and dated 1932, (16 inches x 20 inches). Each work unframed. Provenance: The estate of the artist Born into a family of artists in Columbus, Ohio, Marjorie Campbell became a watercolorist of landscapes and marine scenes. She received her Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1933 and taught in the public school system from 1934 to 1947. During this time, she spent her summers traveling and painting and studied privately with Hans Hofmann at Provincetown, Massachusetts, Millard Sheets in California and New Mexico (whose influence is clearly evident) and Emil Bistram at Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She exhibited at the Ohio Watercolor Society in the 1930's. In 1948, she returned to the University of Ohio as an associate professor of art, and also met fellow faculty member Roy Lichtenstein. From 1949 to 1978, she was Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls from which she retired. The ends of the cross bars with two Bishop Saints. the finial with a dove, sign of the Holy Spirit, and below two men in a boat. Interesting. 6.5"x6". Provenance: The Estate of Professor Marjorie D.       (American 1910-1998) "The Dance" circa 1940. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right. 15"x21.25" (unframed). Provenance: The Estate of the Artist. Marjorie D. Campbell was born into a family of artists in Columbus, Ohio. Both her father William Dallas Campbell and her mother Harriet Dunn Campbell were art teachers who instructed in private schools, public school and college. Marjorie received her Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1933. She taught art in the public school system from 1934-1947. During her years as a public school teacher she spent her summers traveling and painting. It was during her summer sojourns that Campbell studied with a variety of prominent artists including Hans Hoffman at Providence town, Mass., Millard Sheets in California and Emil Bisttram at Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She returned to the University of Ohio in 1948 where she was an associated professor of art. It was while teaching there she met fellow faculty member and then unknown artist Roy Lichtenstein. In 1949 Campbell accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls where she retired in 1978.
