Description

(American 1910-1998) "The Dance" circa 1940. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right. 15"x21.25" (unframed). Provenance: The Estate of the Artist. Marjorie D. Campbell was born into a family of artists in Columbus, Ohio. Both her father William Dallas Campbell and her mother Harriet Dunn Campbell were art teachers who instructed in private schools, public school and college. Marjorie received her Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1933. She taught art in the public school system from 1934-1947. During her years as a public school teacher she spent her summers traveling and painting. It was during her summer sojourns that Campbell studied with a variety of prominent artists including Hans Hoffman at Providence town, Mass., Millard Sheets in California and Emil Bisttram at Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She returned to the University of Ohio in 1948 where she was an associated professor of art. It was while teaching there she met fellow faculty member and then unknown artist Roy Lichtenstein. In 1949 Campbell accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls where she retired in 1978.
