        Cast metal profile view bust relief of George Washington. Inscribed on edge of shoulder "From Houdon's bust by C Calverley Sc. 1877". Inscribed below shoulder "Copyright 1877 by W.S. Barlow N.Y. The bust from which I mottled this medallion has carved upon it the following inscription C. Calverley Sc. This bust is from the living face of Washington by Houdon Oct. 1785. Permission was granted to Clark Mills in 1849 by Col. Washington at Mt. Vernon to take a copy of the original bust in bronze, Clark Mills Sc." Housed in period oak frame. SIZE: 28-1/2" x 24" Overall. PROVENANCE: From a fine Kentucky Estate. CONDITION: Very good condition with very good patina. Frame having grey overpaint. 9-92230

        Charles Calverly (NY, 1833-1914), John Brown bust, signed and dated "C. Calverly Sc. 1873," with foundry mark reading "Robert Wood & Co. / Bronze Founders / Phila." 32 in. This may be the very same bronze bust owned by the Union League Club in New York, NY, as that bust is now unlocated (see page 158, American Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Volume I, published 1999). Attractive patina with scattered verdigris.
