    • KREUZIGUNG CHRISTI MIT MADONNA UND JOHANNES DEM TÄUFER

KREUZIGUNG CHRISTI MIT MADONNA UND JOHANNES DEM TÄUFER

      Est: €25,000 - €50,000

RefOld4321 BARTOLOMEO BULGARINI ('ALSO KNOWN AS UGOLINO LORENZETTI') About 1300 / 1310 Siena - 4th September 1378 Ibid CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST WITH MADONNA AND JOHN THE BAPTIST Tempera on chalk ground on wooden panel, gilded. Nimbs punched (parqueted). 34 x 17,5 cm (total size: 39,5 x 22,5 cm). Verso: panel with two old custom stamps. Part. min. old restored, frame with slight gilding losses. Otherwise extraordinarily good condition for the age of the panel, with min. old structural modifications. Frame. An almost identical composition by Bartolomeo Bulgarini was auctioned at Bonhams in London on 11th December 2002 (lot 324). The panel offered there was extended by a few landscape elements, but seems to be in poorer condition than the panel offered here and appears very assembled in compositional appearance. It is possible that the panel offered there is a slightly later workshop work after the work offered here. Bulgarini's works are stylistically very close to the works of Pietro Lorenzetto and the paintings of Ugolino di Nero. For this reason, the painter was initially given the need name 'Ugolino Lorenzetti' until the 18th century, when Bulgarini succeeded in attributing the so-called 'Biccherna panels' to him. Based on these panel paintings, it was subsequently possible to decipher more of the painter's oeuvre and to assign pictures in different collections to his work. Bulgarini was probably mainly active in Siena, where he is mentioned in several documents from 1337 until his death in 1378. Today, his works are housed in many important museums in the world: among others, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Pinacoteca Nationale in Siena, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Städel in Frankfurt and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne. Köln. We are grateful to Prof. Michele Danieli for his help in attributing the work offered here. angebotenen Werkes. Expertise: Enclosed Swiss import declaration dated 31.10.1962 (copy available). Expertise: Beigefügt: Einfuhrerklärung Schweiz vom 31.10.1962 (liegt in Kopieform vor). Provenance: Westphalian Private Collection (since 1962). Previously Private collection Switzerland.

Bartolomeo di Messer Bulgarini (Siena 1337-1378) The Crucifixion with the Madonna and Saint John

      Est: $23,551 - $31,401

the Baptist oil on gold ground panel 27.5 x 18 cm. (10 7/8 x 7 1/8 in.) unframed In 1917 Bernard Berenson named a group of paintings as being by 'Ugolino Lorenzetti', an artist who according to Berenson was influenced by Ugolino di Nerio and Pietro Lorenzetti. The correct identification for the painter as being Bartolomeo Bulgarini was revealed by Millard Meiss (Art Bulletin, 1931, p. 376, and Rivista d'Arte, 1936, p.113). The present work can be compared with the Crucifixion with Saint Francis in the Berenson Collection, Villa I Tatti, Settignano, and the Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist, offered at Sotheby's, New York, 16 May, 1996, 9. We are grateful to Everett Fahy for confirming the attribution on the basis of transparencies.
