Lot 324: Bartolomeo di Messer Bulgarini (Siena 1337-1378) The Crucifixion with the Madonna and Saint John

(10 7/8 x 7 1/8 in.) unframed In 1917 Bernard Berenson named a group of paintings as being by 'Ugolino Lorenzetti', an artist who according to Berenson was influenced by Ugolino di Nerio and Pietro Lorenzetti. The correct identification for the painter as being Bartolomeo Bulgarini was revealed by Millard Meiss (Art Bulletin, 1931, p. 376, and Rivista d'Arte, 1936, p.113). The present work can be compared with the Crucifixion with Saint Francis in the Berenson Collection, Villa I Tatti, Settignano, and the Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist, offered at Sotheby's, New York, 16 May, 1996, 9.
