He studied at the Munich Academy and is particularly known for his lifelike portraits of young women. The present work depicts a girl, her head turned over her shoulder haughtily looking at the viewer. She is wearing a red coat whose color shades are reflected in the lips. The dark eyes reflect a deep melancholy, thus the sitter seems distant and preoccupied in thoughts. The light flesh tones are rendered with great skill glowing before the dark indistinct background. The painting is signed 'G Buchner' upper left. It is in good condition with some retouchings along the edges. The frame shows slight signs of wear. The framed work measures 38 x 33.5 cm, the panel is framed by four narrow battens and measures 16 x 21 cm. Georg Buchner (1858-1914) Georg Buchner studied at the Munich Academy under Gyula Benczur, Wilhelm von Lindenschmit und Franz Defregger. He initially worked as a draftsman and created illustrations for the magazine 'Fliegende Blätter'. From 1890 onwards he exhibited his paintings at the Munich Glaspalast and the following year at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin. In 1893 he joined the Munich Secession.
