Adolf Brütt, Vigorous Bronze Sculpture 'Swordbearer', 1912

      Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Dark brown patinated bronze Germany, 1912 Adolf Carl Johannes Brütt (1855-1939) - German sculptor Signed 'BRÜTT' on the plinth Foundry mark on the plinth Small version of the 'Swordbearer' on the town hall square in Kiel Height: 62 cm An impressive bronze by the famous German sculptor; Brütt's sculptures fetch over 12,000 Euros on the international auction market This bronze sculpture by German sculptor Adolf Brütt was created in 1912. It is a smaller version of the 3 meter-tall statue of the 'Swordbearer', which was erected in the same year in front of the town hall in Kiel. Brütt designed the sculpture as a modern version of Roland - a statue, which adorns many markets and town squares since the Middle-Ages, symbolising the town law. Like the original, this bronze shows an athletic young man holding a sword in his right hand. The finely crafted feet, the period hairstyle and the prominent facial features are particularly appealing. The bronze sculpture by Adolf Brütt is in fair condition with signs of age and use. Along the segmented parts the joints are a little loose, e.g. on the blade of the sword and the arms. On the underside the bolt nuts are a later addition. The sculpture is signed 'BRÜTT' and bears the foundry mark (illegible) on the plinth. The sculpture measures 62 cm in height. Adolf Carl Johannes Brütt (1855-1939) Adolf Brütt initially trained as a stonemason in Kiel and then studied sculpture at the Berlin Academy of Arts. After graduating, he worked in the workshop of Carl Begas in Munich. From 1883 onwards, Brütt had his own studio. His sculptures 'Eve' (1889) and 'Sword Dancer' (1891/93) brought him international success and he was honoured with the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Brütt was a founding member of the Munich Secession and a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. He created large sculptures in the public sphere for numerous German cities such as Kiel, Hamburg, Berlin, and his home town Husum. He was a professor at the Weimar Art School where he founded the school of sculpture and bronze foundry, which was opened in 1905. Smaller models have been created from his large sculptures, which are much coveted amongst collectors.
