Portrait of the famous conductor, pianist and composer Bruno Walter, with dedication to the mucisian Joseph de Bustinduy, active in Athens Conservatoire and Patras, dated "31.10.1938" and signed by  B. Walter, all in black pen. Also signed in pencil by the photographer "Nellys". Silver printed photograph (21x28cm) with photographers cachet on reverse and photographers relief cachet on obverse, pasted on photographers passe-partout.  Upper right corner of passe-partout creased, light wear on passe-partout and few blanc spots scattered in photo (please refer to the provided photograph).

        Walter, Bruno (Dirigent) Handschriftlich verfasste und unterschriebene Postkarte des Komponisten Bruno Walter an den Industriellen und Musik-Bibliophilen Paul Hirsch aus dem europäischem Exil kurz nach der Machtergreifung der Nazis. Datiert: 30.III.1933. Echt-Photopostkarte . Mit sehr persönlichem Anschreiben: " Nehmen Sie mit diesen kurzen, innigst gefühlten (?) Worten des Dankes vorlieb - ich weiss, Sie sind wahre Freunde, betrachten Sie mich auch als solchen... Amsterdam, 30.III.1933". Adressiert an die Familie von Paul Hirsch an die bekannte Adresse: Neue Mainzerstraße 57 in Frankfurt am Main. - Seltener Beleg des berühmten deutsch-österreichisch- später amerikanischen Dirigenten, Pianisten und Komponisten Bruno Walter (1876 - 1962), der noch am 17. März 1933 kurz nach der "Machtergreifung" der Nationalsozialisten sein viertes Konzert mit den Berliner Philharmonikern geben wollte. Die neuen Machthaber drohten, sie würden im Saal alles kurz und klein schlagen lassen, falls Walter das Podium betreten sollte. In der Folge emigrierte Walter nach Österreich. Dort dirigierte er oft die Wiener Philharmoniker, außerdem leitete er zahlreiche Opernaufführungen an der Wiener Staatsoper sowie bei den Salzburger Festspielen. - Paul Adolf Hirsch (1881 - 1951) war Industrieller und um das Jahr 1930 Besitzer der größten privaten Musikbibliothek Europas und konnte diese nach seiner Emigration 1936 gegen alle Widerstände nach Cambridge überführen.

Zürich, 18juin 1931. 2 pp. bi-feuillet in-8, en-tête du «Dolder Grand Hotel», en français; petite fente au pli. € 150-200 S’excusant de répondre tardivement à sa correspondante; (…) Je n’ai pas encore répondu deux charmantes lettres – non, beaucoup plus que charmantes: pures et touchantes; mais il n’est que maintenant que j’ai trouvé un peu de tranquillité (…) Mais ces deux lettres contiennent presque un énigme: ce sont deux sœurs qui m’ont écrit Une inconsciente de l’autre Gilberte est la jeune pianiste et Josette – En tout cas, je vous remercie profondément. C’est un grand bonheur pour moi que je pouvais parler par ma musique à tels cœurs si purs, si chauds et si pleins de musique (…).

This is a rare letter, not translated, written in the 1920's from Hotel Pontresina in Switzerland.

        Photographer: W. Weis, Vienna. Portrait of Bruno Walter. 1912. Vintage, sepia-toned, matte gelatin silver print. 20,5 x 15,5 cm. Signed, dedicated and dated by Bruno Walter in ink in lower portion of image, mounted to original studio board (some traces of use, dusty) with photographer's name, address Vienna.This portrait was taken in 1912 in Vienna where Bruno Walter had an engagement at the Vienna Opera house. From 1913 - 1922 he conducted at the opera in Munich where Thomas Mann defended him against anti-Semitic attacks. In 1933 he emigrated to Switzerland and France and finally to the USA in 1939, where he worked as a conductor for the Los Angeles Philarmonic Orchestra. Among the circa 1500 musicians who emigrated from Europe, Walter was the most famous. – A few light scuff/soil marks, otherwise in very good condition.

        BRUNO WALTER(1876-1972) German conductor, principally of Mahler, conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic (where he was musical adviser from 1947 to 1949), and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. Between 1941 and 1959 he also conducted at the Metropolitan Opera. Fine content A.L.S. 5pp. 8vo., [London], June 9, 1925, in German to Herr Hoffmann [Josef Hoffmann?], in part: "...I gather from your happy letter that you have gone to Vienna...on the 9th I am still conducting in Berlin and thus not ready to rehearse in Paris...One question: is Trocadero even possible? Only just today I have been told that the acoustics would kill everything. In that case, the concert would not allow me to make an impression and to have success....On the 17th I am conducting in Liverpool...following will be two concerts in London...One evening before these ensemble rehearsals a piano rehearsal with the choirs...Following that I will have the tour with the Vienna Philharmonic...at the end of August, Salzburg... ". At the time of this writing, Walter had assumed the directorship of the Berlin State Opera, a post he held until 1929. Boldly penned, slight rusted paper clip impression at top corner, otherwise very good. $150-200
