      G. BRÜCKNER (1823-1848), The class struggle, 1847, Pencil

      Est: €600 - €800

Gottlob Heinrich Brückner (1823 Lengefeld - 1848 ): The class struggle Dispute between children in a school class, 1847, Pencil Technique: Pencil and Indian ink on Paper Inscription: lower left signed: "Gottlob Heinrich Brückner comp.". lower left dated: "1847.". Date: 1847 Description: The central figure in this drawing by Heinrich Brückner is a boy with his arms crossed. He is standing between two groups of children with his bare feet crossed in embarrassment. Above him is a sign attached to a wooden beam. The boy divides the scene into an elite, well-dressed group of pupils with books and satchels, and a peasant, barefoot group with an older girl supervising the other children. He looks over at the schoolchildren with a sulky expression on his face, but they only meet him with mocking and averse glances. He has turned his back on them and turned to his roots, to rural life. Heinrich Brückner has portrayed the problem of class differences in a wonderfully empathetic way and wrapped the issue in a childlike guise. Gottlob Heinrich Brückner was born in Lengefeld in Saxony in 1823. From 1842, he studied at the Dresden Academy under Anton Krüger, August Rietschel and Carl Peschel. Three years later he was accepted into Julius Hübner's studio and studied there until he emigrated to America in 1848. The sheet presented here, with its politically critical allusion, was shown at an exhibition at the Dresden Academy in 1846. Keywords: drawing, Germany, child, class, dispute, genre, 19th century, Biedermeier, People, Germany, Size: Paper: 21,7 cm x 23,7 cm (8,5 x 9,3 in), Depiction: 12,8 cm x 14,8 cm (5 x 5,8 in)
