This drawing is stylistically very close to the work of Adrian Ludwig Richter, but the inscription suggests that it is in fact an early work by Gottlob Heinrich Brückner, who studied at the Dresdner Kunstakademie in 1842, while Richter was teaching there. Few of Brückner's works are known and this drawing gives an insight into the young artist's work before he travelled to America in 1848.

We are grateful to Claus-Dirk Langer for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
