    Horace Brown (1876 - 1949) Oil on board, Signed Lower Left, Measures (16 x 20 inches) w/frame (23 x 27 inches) Horace Brown grew up in Springfield, Vermont. In 1902 he was able to buy the home in Springfield his great-great grandfather built in 1790. He later got elected to the Vermont state senate. When his father passed, Brown felt free to take up painting, and in 1916, he became a student, and then a friend, of American Impressionist Willard Metcalf. He began spending winters in Miami sometime before 1943, where he was elected to the prestigious Blue Dome Fellowship of artists. Brown's work can be found in the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, the Wood Memorial Art Gallery in Montpelier, Vermont and the Museum at the University of Kentucky. Born: 1876, Rockford, Illinois. Died: 1949. Education: With Willard Metcalf. Membership: Blue Dome Fellowship; Mid-Vermont Artists.

Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.8 x 61.0 cm), in a signed Laurent frame. Condition: Craquelure. Provenance: Collection of Cheryl and Paul Scott, New Hamphire. N.B. Modernist sculptor and frame maker Robert Laurent (American, 1890-1970) came to New York City in 1901 from France with his family under the aegis of Hamilton Easter Field, who took interest in the young man's artistic education. Laurent subsequently studied in Rome and in Paris, where he was exposed to avant-garde art. Returning to New York in 1910, Laurent began carving frames for his artist friends including John LaFarge, Leon Kroll, Robert Henri, and Childe Hassam, and for wealthy collectors like Dr. Albert Barnes, who commissioned a large number of frames. Margaret Goodwin Clement Rhodes (1881-1975), to whom the work is dedicated, is buried in Rutland, Vermont.
