N.B. Modernist sculptor and frame maker Robert Laurent (American, 1890-1970) came to New York City in 1901 from France with his family under the aegis of Hamilton Easter Field, who took interest in the young man's artistic education. Laurent subsequently studied in Rome and in Paris, where he was exposed to avant-garde art. Returning to New York in 1910, Laurent began carving frames for his artist friends including John LaFarge, Leon Kroll, Robert Henri, and Childe Hassam, and for wealthy collectors like Dr. Albert Barnes, who commissioned a large number of frames.

Margaret Goodwin Clement Rhodes (1881-1975), to whom the work is dedicated, is buried in Rutland, Vermont.
