Jacques-Raymond Brascassat belongs to the generation of artists active at the start of the 19th century who abandoned the genre of classical Arcadian landscape to adopt a more sensitive realism, nurtured by the practice of drawing and plein air sketching. In 1825, he won the second place in the Prix de Rome for historic landscape but was nevertheless able to live in Italy from 1826 to 1829, thanks to a grant awarded by Charles X. Exploring the surroundings of Rome, he created large numbers of studies in the countryside, and according to one of his friends, would come home "burdened with sketches and drawings (1)". This small oil on canvas shows monuments located not far from the Via Appia Antica in the south of Rome. There, in front of the Alban Mountains, the ruins of the Villa dei Quintili and the Aqua Claudia are recognizable, while in the foreground, Brascassat has added the picturesque detail of a peasant and his flock. He has paid particular attention to the description of the sky and the light in which the countryside is bathed, for example emphasizing the stones of the central medieval structure. This study was used to create two larger compositions, one of which, dated 1830, is now in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland (fig. 1) (2). 1. Cited by Ch. Marionneau, 'op. cit.', p. 104. 2. Oil on canvas, 59 x 82 cm. The second is in a private collection, see exh. cat. Lyon, 'op. cit.', p. 65, fig. 26a and 26b. Estimation 15 000 - 20 000 €
