William Bradford’s views, &c.- London: printed for John Booth, 1813.- [2], 24 p.: [13] gravuras coloridas; 37 cm.- E. Reverend William Bradford (1780-1857) was a military chaplain and accompanied the forces of Wellington in the Peninsular War Campaign against Napoleon's troops; his drawings were improved and engraved by J. Clark to illustrate one of the most beautiful books about Portugal and Spain published in the 19th century. A variant of the 1810 edition. The first part contains 39 hand-coloured aquatints, mainly depicting popular costumes and city views. The second one includes 13 coloured aquatints with Portuguese, French and Spanish military uniforms (the copy apparently lacks the 10 text pages with their own title, that come before the military engravings but lacking in many other copies). The text is bilingual in English and French. The engravings comply exactly with the índex. Buffalo skin recent half-binding with protective case. Duarte de Sousa, 102. Tooley, 108.

Note: Andrew Bradford Booth (1844-1923) was born in Scott Co. Kentucky on May 8, 1844, but moved with his parents to Baton Rouge in 1848. He graduated from The Academy there in April 1861 and joined Company K, Third Louisiana Infantry four months later. He served nearly the duration of the war, eventually captured on Christmas Eve 1864 in Livingston Parish and finally paroled at Camp Townsend, May 6, 1865 with the rank of 2nd Sergeant. After the war, he was a merchant in the Ascension Parish town of Hope Villa (which he named) before moving to New Orleans in 1886, where he was a commercial, real estate and insurance agent. He organized the Public Belt Railroad Association in 1888. He was an active member of the Confederate Veterans of America, and served as the Louisiana Commissioner of Military Records from 1915 to 1922. It was during this latter tenure that he compiled the present volumes, which remain the primary resource for Louisiana Confederate soldiers. He died in New Orleans on June 2, 1923.

Sumner, Charles. Autograph Letter Signed by Charles Sumner, to L. Bradford Prince. 12 lines, in ink, on sheet 20x13 cm. (8x5"). Philadelphia: Oct. 29, 1856 Charles Sumner (1811-1874), longtime Senator from Massachusetts with radical anti-slavery sympathies, writes to autograph seeker L.B. Prince, My Dear Sir, I rejoice to find a young man dedicating himself to the truth. Accept my thanks for your kind sympathy & believe me, my dear sir, faithfully yours, Charles Sumner." The letter was written a bare five months after Sumner was brutally attacked on the Senate floor by Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina, resulting in severe injuries that kept he from senatorial duties for three years while he recovered. The Massachusetts General Court reelected him in November of 1856 despite his absence, feeling the empty seat in the Senate chambers served as a powerful symbol of free speech and resistance to slavery. Provenance: L. Bradford Prince, Governor of New Mexico Territory. Foxed with some soiling and staining; good.
