Number 745 as notated in lower left corner "F A Brader 745". Small area of paper loss (not in image) in upper left quadrant. Privately acquired a number of years ago by present owner. 56"w. 44.25"h.

Ferdinand Brader (1833-1901) 1892 Residence of Charles and Susan Wilderson, Columbiana, Ohio colored pencil on paper signed F.A. Brader / 862 lower right framed Sight 29 1/4 x 39 inches. Brader numbered most of his drawings, and this example bears the designation 862. Brader seldom employed colors in his drawings, preferring a monochromatic graphite palette. FARM SCENE BY FERDINAND BRADER (SWISS/AMERICAN, BORN 1833). Baughman Township, Wayne County, Ohio, dated 1888. Graphite on paper, signed lower left, numbered 625, and titled "Residence of Joseph and Anna Gindelsperger". 38"h. 57"w., and a framed Birth and Baptism record for their eldest daughter, Mary Gindelsperger, born on August 28, 1846 in Baughman Township, Wayne County, Ohio, 24.5"h. 20.5"w. Joseph Gindelsperger was born on May 15, 1822 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. On May 26, 1842, Mr. Gindelsperger married Anna Frase in Wayne County, Ohio. Mrs. Gindelsperger was born in 1823 in Chipawa Township, Wayne County, Ohio; daughter of Joseph Frase. Mrs. Gindelsperger died in Baughman Township of said county in 1893. Mr. Gindelsperger died on December 22, 1907 in Baughman Township. This is one of two known Braders to have been done in Baughman Township.

PORTRAIT OF A PENNSYLVANIA FARM BY FERDINAND BRADER (SWISS/AMERICAN, 1833-1901) Graphite on paper, signed lower right. Highly detailed view of a farmhouse and barn, typical of Brader's work. Imperfections. In a walnut frame, 34"h. 40"w. The stone house suggests that this drawing is an early Brader farm portrait, done in eastern Pennsylvania and before he moved west in 1883. Noted Brader scholar Kathleen Wieschaus-Voss has dubbed it an important transitional drawing when Brader was still developing his style. She has included it in her database of all extant examples of Brader's works.

RESIDENCE OF HIRAM STEINMETZ, PIKE TP. STARK CO. OHIO. BY FERDINAND BRADER (SWISS/AMERICAN, BORN, 1833). Graphite on paper, signed lower left and numbered 740. An unusually large view, with the incredible detail typical of Brader's work, including a farm complex, numerous figures and animals, and a train. In its original frame, 37"h. 51"w. This drawing descended in the original family. Hiram Steinmetz was a prosperous farmer, much like his father before him. Fourteen-year-old Hiram first appears in the Census in 1850, and he's still living with his parents, John and Maria, in 1860. By 1870, Hiram had married his wife, Caroline, and had a son, John, and was living in Pike Township, along with his mother, Maria, and a farm laborer named Eli McKenney. The Steinmetz farm can be seen on the 1875 Stark County atlas.

FARM SCENE BY FERDINAND BRADER (SWISS/AMERICAN, BORN 1833). Graphite on paper, signed lower right and numbered 541, and titled below "Residence of Jacob Brumbaugh, Lake Tp: Stark County, Ohio 1887." Large and detailed view of a prosperous farm with numerous animals and figures. Minor imperfections. 23 3/4"h. 34 1/2"w., in a period frame, 26 3/4"h. 37 3/4"w. Jacob Brumbaugh was born in 1854 in Ohio and in 1877 married Emma Grether, and the couple had three children. According to census records, the Brumbaugh family lived in Lake Township in 1870, but by 1880 had moved to Steuben County, Indiana, and then by 1920, to Cook County, Illinois. However, the youngest two children were born in Canton, Stark County, Ohio, indicating that Brumbaugh returned to Ohio from Indiana for a period before heading further west to Illinois. It was during this time that his farm portrait was executed.

FARM LANDSCAPE BY FERDINAND BRADER (SWISS/AMERICAN, B. 1833). Graphite on paper, signed lower left and numbered 493, titled below "The Property of Barney and Rose Wise, Suffield Town. Portage County Ohio 1886. Imperfections. 30 1/2"h. 45 1/2"w., in its original walnut frame, 33 1/2"h. 48 1/2"w. Descended in the Wise family until consigned to this auction. Swiss-born Brader immigrated to the United States in the 1870s and began his drawing of large, intricately detailed farm pictures in Pennsylvania. By 1879, he was in Ohio, roaming Portrage, Medina, Wayne, Stark, and Carroll Counties, drawings pictures for a few dollars and room and board. The Jacob Wise (Weiss) family came to the United States from Germany in 1839 and then headed west to Canal Fulton, Ohio, where they purchased land from the Connecticut Land Company. About 1869, two of Jacob's sons, Bernard and Joseph, purchased the farm portrayed in this picture, and in 1875, Bernard bought his brother's interest. According to family tradition, Brader spent about one week at their farm working on the picture and charged them $3.00; he was also given meals and "all the cider or wine he cared to drink."

Drawing shows panoramic view of large farmstead with connected buildings, barns, fields, and livestock including sheep, horses, cows, chickens, turkeys, etc. Two men with horse drawn plows tend fields. Title in bottom border. Signed lower left and numbered 548. Housed in an antique period burl walnut frame with gold liner. Brader emigrated to Pennsylvania and then on to Ohio. His Ohio drawings were done during the decade 1885-1895. "Brader's drawings are prized for their large scale, fine execution, and warm detailed transcription of rural 19th century life". SIGHT SIZE: 28 1/2" h x 41 1/2" w. CONDITION: Paper has browned and has some staining, several tears and one repair to top edge. 9-91377.
