    BOVE GIACOMO: (1852-1887) Italian Explorer who sailed on the first voyage through the north-east passage and later explored Tierra del Fuego and the Congo River. Extremely rare A.L.S., Giacomo Bove, two pages, 8vo, Cornigliano, Liguria, 10th January 1883, to a lady, in Italian. Bove states that he lends himself entirely to her invitation and the noble aims of the Milanese Committee and remarks 'Moreover, I shall be coming to Milan, indebted in grand part for the benevolence with which my proposals have been received in Italy, where they have always had the enthusiastic backing of the Press. So in contributing, in however small a way, to the noble purpose determined by the Milanese Committee, I can also demonstrate my gratitude towards the city of Milan.' With blank integral leaf (some light overall age wear). Autograph letters of Bove are extremely rare as a result of his suicide at the age of 35 whilst wracked with fever he had contracted on a trip to the Congo. Some light age wear and a neat tear to the first page, professionally repaired and only very slightly affecting the text. G. £250-350

Buenos Aires, Departamento Nacional de Agricultura, 1883. Palau 34155. Henze I, 329. Seltener Forschungsbericht über die Expedition nach Süd-Patagonien und Feuerland, die der italienische Seefahrer Giacomo Bove (1852-1887) in den Jahren 1881-82 leitete. "Für Topographie und Naturwissenschaften recht ergiebig" (Henze). Die Tafeln zeigen verschiedene Landschaften, Eingeborene und ihre Behausungen, Werkzeuge, Schmuck, Segelschiffe sowie detaillierte Karten der bereisten Region. - Vorsätze etwas leimschattig. Innenspiegel mit Montageresten einer Einstecktasche. Titel mit hs. Besitzeintrag von Joseph Theodor Mallmann (geb. 1856), datiert auf das Jahr 1887. Die Tafeln nur ganz vereinzelt minimal fleckig, sonst sauber und wohlerhalten.
