Bordley pt.; lower right dated: 18*4/ May 22nd; upper left inscribed: E.; verso of canvas stamped; Bordley was often with the Custis Lewis family and painted portraits of Nelly, Lawrence and Lorenzo Custis as well as other prominent families of Virginia and Maryland. In a letter from Nelly Custis Lewis to her friend Elizabeth Bordley (the artist's aunt) "your nephew arrived here from Leesburg...he is still with us and very busy... he has almost completed a speaking likeness of Mr. L for Lorenzo [Lawrence and Nelly's son] and tomorrow I sit for mine….We are all so much pleased with Mr. L's likeness, it is most admirable."
