JOHN BEALE BORDLEY II (MARYLAND, 1800-1882) ATTRIBUTED PORTRAIT OF THE BURROUGHS FAMILY CHILDREN, oil on canvas, a well executed depiction of four children posed in an outdoor setting, one girl holding a cat, no signature located, original giltwood and gesso frame.

39 1/2" x 44" sight, 49 1/2" x 54" overall.

Circa 1840.

Condition Report

Excellent condition, on original stretchers without punctures or tears, cleaned and minor inpainting to the faces of the boy and oldest girl, small area of additional inpainting at lower center edge, frame with only very minor losses.

Purchased from a descendent of the Burroughs family of Croom, Prince George's Co., Maryland.

Notes

John Beale Bordley II was the grandson of prominent Maryland planter and judge, John Beale Bordley (1727-1804). He was trained as a lawyer before studying art under Charles Wilson Peale. Bordley painted many prominent families and politicians in the Baltimore and Washington, DC areas during the second quarter of the 19th century including members of the Lewis and Custis families. Three of his works hang in the Maryland State House in Annapolis, MD.
