      WALTER BOMAR (1918-1988) AMERICAN AIRLINES / JET POWERED ELECTRA FLAGSHIPS. Circa 1959. 40x30 1/2 inches, 101 1/2x77 1/2 cm. Condition A-: expert overpainting in upper left corner;. minor restoration at edges. The Electras (Lockheed L-188s) were America's first turboprop airplanes. They could achieve speeds of almost a hundred miles-per-hour faster than the piston-powered aircraft of the early 1950s. American Airlines began flying the planes in 1959. By the mid-1970s, due to a number of crashes and technical difficulties, most of the Electras had been retired from service. Walter Bomar was a prolific graphic artist, illustrator, poster designer and painter. Huhne p. 133.

      Original vintage health charity poster - Give to Conquer Cancer Strike Back - issued by the New York City Cancer Committee of the American Cancer Society (founded 1913). Dynamic design by Walter Bomar (1918-1988) featuring the Society's Sword of Hope symbol of a crusader hand holding out a sword with the classical themed medical twin-serpent caduceus symbol as the handle against a blue background with the stylised text above and below. The Sword of Hope logo was designed by George E. Durant who won the first prize in a 1928 poster competition held by the American Society for the Control of Cancer (ASCC; renamed the American Cancer Society in 1945) and the New York City Cancer Committee.
