Dault recalls the artist telling him that this signature motif began as the hands of a watch pointing towards midnight. Over time, the “line of organizational force” became less rigid. In Aid to Memory this organizational force serves to enliven the picture plane and is in turn echoed by the colourful ladders that act, rather classically, as repoussoir elements to frame the compostion.

DAVID BOLDUC (1945 - 2010)SOFT CENTREOIL ON CANVAS; SIGNED AND TITLED VERSO54.25" x 67.25" - 137.8 x 170.8 cm.Provenance:Purchased directly from the artistNote:DAVID BOLDUC (1945 - 2010)"The drawings are a conscious attempt to represent the world around me and the paintings are a conscious attempt not to represent what the world looks like. To some degree I have no control over the paintings. I'm not trying to make it look like something, I'm not trying to describe a narrative. I'm trying with colour, line, shape and texture to get something across to me and everything else is unimportant until that happens."- David Bolduc -Toronto-born David Bolduc was one of Canada's leading modernist poetic, lyrical abstract paintings, working in a number of styles, experimenting with many media, exploring layers of colour and light. Through his art, he offered the world his optimism, intuition and intellect. David Bolduc was born in Toronto in 1945. He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1963 to 1965 and went on to study at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1965, with Jean Goguen and Arthur Lismer. His first exhibitions were held in Montreal galleries, including a solo show at the Elysee Theatre in 1966. Bolduc returned to Toronto at the end of 1966 to take on a position as conservationist at the Royal Ontario Museum. In 1967 Bolduc had a solo exhibition at the prestigious Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. He received a grant in 1968 from the Canada Council, which allowed him to leave his job at the ROM to travel extensively through Europe, Turkey, Nepal, Uzbekistan and Moscow. In the ensuing 33 years, Bolduc continued his travels throughout the world, but had an affinity to India, having visited it at least 15 times. He drew much of his artistic inspiration from his love of travel, incorporating art traditions from Persian miniatures, floral designs in persian carpets to African art and Asian calligraphy. Bolduc was also known for his work as a book illustrator, including Roy K. Kiyyiooka's Pear Tree Poems, as well as Michael Ondaatje's The Story, a project on behalf of the World Literacy Fund.Between 1968 and 2008, Bolduc worked prodigiously, his works featured in either solo or group exhibitions every year but one. He also taught at York University, the Ontario College of Art, and Concordia University. In 2009, David Bolduc was diagnosed with a brain tumor, yet he pursued with endless optimism. He plunged into his final works, producing an astonishing 40 canvases, 15 or so of which were exhibited in Days and Nights in the Forest: David Bolduc, held at Christopher Cutts Gallery in Toronto in 2010 . Some critics state that this collection was the most impressive work of Bolduc's career.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsAgnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, ONArt Gallery of Brant, Brantford, ONArt Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, ONArt Gallery of Peterborough, Peterborough, ONArt Gallery of Windsor, Windsor, ONBank of MontrealBeaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, New BrunswickCadillac FairviewCanada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, ONCanadian Development Corporation Costain Ltd. DAVID BOLDUC FROM THE TRAIN acrylic on canvassigned, titled and dated 1988 on the overflap; unframed 60 ins x 56 ins; 152.4 cms x 142.2 cms Provenance:Charles Bronfman's Claridge Collection, MontrealNote:Sold to benefit Historica Canada. The abstract paintings of the prolific David Bolduc are known for their poetic and lyrical quality. Maintaining a style often referred to as 'exotic' or 'eccentric' modernism, Bolduc is undoubtedly an heir to the abstraction of his many great predecessors such as Jack Bush and Gershon Iskowitz, although he works in a style of softness as opposed to the gestural. Inspired by motifs in nature such as flowers, trees and stars which he admired during his many worldly travels, Bolduc interpreted his subjects using a colourful palette and building bold, impasto surfaces. In West Night, Bolduc presents a bright night sky with a dynamic burst of colour emanating through the centre. Stars speckle the top half of the canvas, descending upon the rippling waves below. The irregular lines which interject this peaceful scene liven the surface by bringing a sense of movement to the still night. Unsure whether this form indicates a shooting star, a mass of land, or a life form, Bolduc keeps the viewer guessing with his unique sense of the abstract.Bolduc was born in Toronto in 1945 and spent one year at the Ontario College of Art (Toronto) before studying at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Montréal. It was in Montréal that he would hold his first solo show at the Elysée Theatre in 1966. Bolduc's artistic career spanned over three decades and included an extensive exhibition schedule with many commercial galleries in Toronto. His work is represented in major public collections throughout Canada. Since his passing in 2010, he has remained an important figure of abstract art in Canada.

She goes on to describe the way the works are composed: "Bolduc usually alternates between two modes of picture making: severe formal inquiries and more elaborate, more spontaneous-looking images. Both types share a characteristic format: a continuous, inflected ground with a (usually centralized) drawn element, and characteristic motifs... Since about 1974, he has been concerned with formal (and conceptual) paradox, exploring polarities of austerity and sensuality, reticence and aggression, individuality and reference."
