Title is Johnny Armstrong. 18 7/8" long, 15 1/2" tall, 7" wide. Marked 1975 WFS on the base. Wyoming Foundry Studios. Provenance: Harry Andrew Jackson Estate. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834 - 1890) was active/lived in United Kingdom, Austria. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm is known for Sculptor; Medalist. The Vienna-born sculptor and medalist Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, 1st Baronet, gained international fame in the middle of the 19th century for his medals and sculptures, which were awarded the Imperial Prize and were awarded at the 1862 World Exhibition. In 1962 Boehm moved to London, where he made a name for himself primarily with the statue of the Duke of Wellington in Hyde Park Corner and the face of Queen Victoria he modeled on the commemorative coin on the occasion of her golden jubilee of the throne. The sculptures of Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm were very well received at the court of Queen Victoria, which is probably why one of her daughters, Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, was allowed to take sculpture lessons with him, in whose presence the artist died in South Kensington in 1890. He also created the marble sculpture for the tomb of the here represented Princess Alice of Great Britain and Ireland, Grand Duchess of Hesse and near Rhine, another daughter of Queen Victoria. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm is one of the most important sculptors of the Victorian era. Many of his works can still be found in public spaces in London and Balmoral in Scotland and are represented in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Collection Trust, among others.

        Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm R.A. (British, 1834-1890), Suffolk Punch stallion and groom, bronze Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm R.A. (British, 1834-1890), Suffolk Punch stallion and groom, signed in the casting, bronze, weighs appoximately 28kg, 58cm high, length of horse 59cm, base 50 x 37cm Provenance:Lindsey Knapp (Victoria Gallery). A good bronze, with excellent definition and of a good colour. An early casting. Vetted by LAPADA antique bronze specialist in May 2021. Footnote:Boehm was born in Vienna and was the son of the Hungarian sculptor, Joseph Daniel Boehm, under whom he studied before leaving to continue his training in Paris and Italy. He emigrated to England in 1862 and became the Court Sculptor, counting the nobility and other royals amongst his patrons. Queen Victoria was a great admirer and made him Sculptor in Ordinary. He was 'immensely popular with Queen Victoria' and Princess Louise, her daughter, was his outstanding pupil (1). Both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were portrayed several times. Celebrities such as Franz Liszt, Charles Darwin and Benjamin Disraeli were also patrons of his. He exhibited 123 sculptures at the Royal Academy, was elected R.A. in 1882 and knighted in 1889. Well known for his portrait busts, examples of which can be found in the National Portrait Gallery, he also produced gargantuan pieces such as the equestrian statue of the Prince of Wales, which exemplifies his skill in depicting horses, something that is demonstrated in Suffolk Punch and groom. He also produced sculptures of cattle and domestic animals. This is the stallion man, the groom with the Suffolk Punch stallion. When this sculpture was first made in 1869, the stallions were walked everywhere around the farms or other establishments, that relied on horse power, to serve the mares. The rolled blankets, halters etc and food pouches were attached across the stallion's back to the roller/surcingle. They walked them miles and this made the stallions fit and healthy and on the whole well-behaved. The groom himself is dressed in typical, top-quality attire. Note his gaiters etc. The stallion is probably misbehaving in anticipation of the role of serving the mare. Hence why his tail is neatly banged-up and not docked as he wouldn’t have been worked in a cart. This represents social history at the time when there was no form of mechanised transport, for although the wealthy may have had a horse-drawn box, this would have been rare in the farming community and largely superfluous. Sufolk Punch Stallion and Groom was first exhibited at the R.A. in 1869. See lot 79 in Bonhams' sale on the 30th of April 2013, where another sold for £15,000 (including premium, which was 25% at the time). 1.Mackay, James; The Dictionary of Sculptors in Bronze, published 1977, page 45. Condition:Ok. Underneath base later wood inset.

Attributed to Sir Joseph Boehm, Austrian, 1834-189…

        Est: £300 - £500

Attributed to Sir Joseph Boehm, Austrian, 1834-1890, a Victorian wax portrait relief of Thomas Carlyle, unsigned, of oval form in original oak frame, 17cm high, 14.5cm wide, 30 x 28cm overall Provenance, Lyon & Turnbull, 25 June 2008, lot 72. Note: Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish essayist, satirist and historian and a recognised literary leader during the Victorian era. He was presented with a unique gold specimen medal struck to honour the occasion of his 80th birthday on 4th December 1875, together with a testimonial letter, signed by 119 of his eminent contemporaries. The design was closely based on Boehm's portrait medallion of Carlyle executed in 1874. A rough brown wax relief, now in Carlyle's House in Chelsea, provided the basis of the medal, which was engraved by George T Morgan from Boehm's wax portraits. The current lot is well finished and is likely to have played a major part in the evolution of the birthday medal. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890) studied in his native Vienna, Italy and Paris before establishing himself in England in 1862, acquiring British nationality in 1865. As a reward for his many commissions from Queen Victoria he was appointed 'Sculptor in Ordinary to the Queen.' His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1862 and 1891; he was nominated a member in 1882. Please refer to department for condition report

        Est: £10,000 - £15,000

SIR JOSEPH EDGAR BOEHM 1834-1890 STALLION WITH GROOM. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm was the favourite sculptor of Queen Victoria and the royal family. From Hungarian parentage, born in Austria, Boehm moved to England in 1862 becoming a British subject three years later. Boehm was a highly successful sculptor, with many of his works in public spaces in London: General Charles Gordon in St Paul's Cathedral, The Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner, and many portrait busts in the National Portrait Gallery, are some examples of his prolific work. Provenance: Owned by the Henry Young family, certainly Arthur Stanley Young until 1952 (Henry Young was the founder for Boehm). Owned by the Henriques family 1952-1984. Owned by the Hurman family 1984-present. History: This is the actual bronze illustrated in "Animals in Bronze" by Christopher Payne, page 357. It was incorrectly catalogued then as "Suffolk Punch". The bronze "The Cart Stallion with Groom" was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869 in the Sculpture Gallery (catalogue number 1199). This bronze was cast at Henry Young's foundry in Pimlico in the early 1870s. An identical cast is in the Guildhall Art Gallery. The same sculpture was used with minor changes to create "The Horse and his Master" exhibited at the RA in 1874 and can now be found in Malvern Park Solihull. Royalist and Realist: The Life and Works of Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm by Mark Stocker suggests that there are two other copies in private collections, this bronze is from one of those private collections. (The owner was in correspondence with Stocker, 14th July 1984). Signed "BOEHM". 59cms x 50cms. Rich dark brown over copper brown patination.

Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (Austrian, 1834–1890) ST SIMON $6,000. – $9,000. Bronze, 22 3⁄4” x 27” Signed $6,000. – 9,000. At stud, St. Simon sired 423 foals, who won a combined 571 races and brought in more than half a million pounds in earnings in two decades. Taunton writes again of him in Famous Horses, stating “at the stud his success has been so wonderful that it has been almost impossible to secure a subscription to him, whatever the price offered.” He was the leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland nine times and the leading broodmare sire six times. He sired 10 English classic winners: Memoir, Semolina, La Flèche, Mrs. Butterwick, Amiable, Persimmon (lot 41), St Frusquin, Diamond Jubilee, La Roche, and Winifreda. His bloodline continued to Ribot, Nearco, and Northern Dancer in modern times. Anne Peters considers his bloodline to be “one of the most widespread and omnipresent in the Thoroughbred gene pool today.” Nearly all of the horse portraits from the Blackwell collection in this sale represent descendants of St. Simon or have some connection to the horse.
