          Van Boeckel, Louis Lier 1857 - 1944 H. 188/D.ca. 60 cm An impressive patinated iron cast snake figure. Patinated and signed at the base "VANBOECKEL". Minor traces of age. Belgian Collection. Louis (Lodewijk) Van Boeckel was a Belgian blacksmith. He was a successful autodidact and received the highest award at the World Exhibition in 1900. He was commissioned, among others, for the balustrades of the National Bank in Athens and the White House in Washington D.C and created several cathedral gates in South America. Lit.           VAN BOECKEL LOUIS (1857-1944) "Aigle enserrant le serpent.", circa 1900-1920. Haut. : 120 cm - Rare pièce de ferronnerie, chaque plume étant martelée séparément puis assemblée les unes aux autres. Louis Van Boeckel s'est passionné pour la ferronnerie dès son plus jeune âge. En 1900, il participe à l'Exposition Universelle de Paris où il reçut sa plus haute récompense. Spécialisé dans l'exécution de sculptures animalières, de motifs végétaux et de cadres de cheminées et de miroirs, il reçut de nombreuses commandes publiques dont celles de la Banque Nationale d'Athènes et de la Maison-Blanche à Washington.           White metal,  with dark-brown patina Belgium c. 1910/20 Louis or Lode (Lodewijk) van Boeckel (1857-1944) – Belgian ornamentical blacksmith With embossed stamp ‘LVANBOECK’ Sculptural, naturalistic figure of an eagle in attack position Sitting on a part of a tree trunk, wings are spread, the neck stretched forward and the beak opened to sream Plumage rendered detailed Dimensions: c. 89 x 131 x 90 cm Very good condition Condition:The figure is in a very good condition with minor signs of age and wear. The surfaces are partially rubbed; in places some elements are bent. The dimensions measure c. 89 x 131 x 90 cm. Louis van Boeckel (1857-1944) The artist was born in 1857 in Lier and absolved an apprenticeship as blacksmith in the factory of Verwilt. After his military service, van Boeckel, who is also known as Lodewijk or Lode van Boeckel, restored the latticework of Lier’s town hall and then started working independently. He quickly gained general recognition with his original artworks. He particularly showed off his imaginative designs and technical mastery in representation of animals. In addition to this, van Boeckel created garlands, banisters and grids (even for the White House in Washington). Over time, he reduced his highly ornamental designs in favor of figurative representations. Van Boeckel’s works can be admired today at the Museum Timmermans-Opsomer in Lier.
