Bodoni, the most celebrated European printer of his era, was also the most important type designer and punchcutter in Italy during his day. He was responsible for some of the most graceful and immaculate books to be printed during the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, and this publication is to be counted among his most beautiful productions. A FINE COLLECTION OF BODONI CATALOGUES, the last two published by Giambattista Bodoni's widow after his death. Bodoni began as a compositor in Rome at Propaganda Fide in 1758. Ten years later he was appointed Director of the Duke of Parma's Royal Press, Stamperia Reale. It is then that his most important work began. The Stamperia Reale published Greek, Latin and Italian manuscripts along with required ephemera for the court. From 1791 onwards, Bodoni's own publications bore the imprint "Co' tipi Bodoniani" to differentiate his private works from those of the royal press. Brooks makes no attempt to divide the output of the two presses, and lists catalogues of both. Included here is the 1787 catalogue of the Stamperia Reale, predating the earliest catalogue from Bodoni's own press by six years (1793). Giani notes that the final catalogue here, containing 297 items, is of considerable documentary importance (Catalogo delle autentiche Edizioni Bodoniane, 1948, p.9). Bodoni's catalogues are very SCARCE: RLIN lists only a single copy of the posthumous 1820 catalogue; no other Bodoni catalogues are there located. American Book Prices Current records only one at auction, a copy of the posthumous 1830 catalogue of the remaining stock, sold in 1995. (8)

      Est: $200 - $300

BODONI, Giambattista (1740-1813). Autograph printer's, bookseller's and binder's bill addressed to the last Bishop of Antwerp, Cornelis Franciscus de Nelis. [Parma, 1795]. Part sheet of laid paper (unwatermarked, 248 x 184 mm). One page, 19 entries on 20 lines, headed: Per S. E. Revd Monsignor Francesco Di Nelis, Vescovo di Anversa, complete; contemporary endorsement at foot: "1795 Carattere autografo del celebre tipografo e letterato Gbatta Bodoni di Parma, Cittadella." Before he was created Bishop of Antwerp in 1785, De Nelis (1736-98) had been librarian of Louvain University. He was known as one of the most learned antiquaries of the Southern Low Countries, particularly for his idea of publishing the collected works of early Belgian historians and unpublished chronicles, which was later taken up by the Imperial and Royal Academy of Brussels. De Nelis' trial balloon, Belgicarum rerum liber prodromus (1795), was printed by Bodoni in Parma (Brooks 589), and 58 copies of the work appear on this bill, variously priced according to the binding provided (morocco, calf, half calf or boards). Two other works printed by Bodoni for De Nelis are billed: 300 copies of L'Adoration ou la Prière (Brooks 638) and the bindings for L'Aveugle de la Montagne (Brooks 609), the latter being the costliest item on the bill.
