A FINE COLLECTION OF BODONI CATALOGUES, the last two published by Giambattista Bodoni's widow after his death. Bodoni began as a compositor in Rome at Propaganda Fide in 1758. Ten years later he was appointed Director of the Duke of Parma's Royal Press, Stamperia Reale. It is then that his most important work began. The Stamperia Reale published Greek, Latin and Italian manuscripts along with required ephemera for the court. From 1791 onwards, Bodoni's own publications bore the imprint "Co' tipi Bodoniani" to differentiate his private works from those of the royal press. Brooks makes no attempt to divide the output of the two presses, and lists catalogues of both. Included here is the 1787 catalogue of the Stamperia Reale, predating the earliest catalogue from Bodoni's own press by six years (1793). Giani notes that the final catalogue here, containing 297 items, is of considerable documentary importance (Catalogo delle autentiche Edizioni Bodoniane, 1948, p.9). Bodoni's catalogues are very SCARCE: RLIN lists only a single copy of the posthumous 1820 catalogue; no other Bodoni catalogues are there located. American Book Prices Current records only one at auction, a copy of the posthumous 1830 catalogue of the remaining stock, sold in 1995. (8)
