§ Martin Bloch (1883-1954) Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice signed 'Bloch' (lower right) charcoal 63 x 50cm Provenance: Collection of Michael Black (1928-2022) Michael Black was a Cornishman who came to Cambridge to read English and Modern Languages in 1945 and he remained there throughout his life. After National Service in Austria, he was appointed Assistant Secretary at Cambridge University Press. In 1965, he became Chief Editor and in 1978, University Publisher. Besides his work as publisher, Michael wrote criticism of the novels of D.H. Lawrence and he was a music lover. His interest in painting was certainly influenced by his tutor at Jesus, A.P. Rossiter, in whose room he saw paintings by the German artist, Martin Bloch. In the 1980s, in response to the annual exhibitions of the Cambridge Society of Painters and Sculptors, he began to form a modest collection of paintings, drawings and prints. The first works he acquired were by Elisabeth Vellacott, and Nan Youngman, both of whom became friends. Michael was a regular purchaser at the Cambridge Drawing Society and had a particular interest in printmaking. In the early 1990s he met Caroline Hemming and encouraged her to print more of her linocuts for an exhibition at the Broughton House Gallery in King Street in 1997. He took particular pleasure in supporting living artists through purchasing their work.

Martin Bloch 1883-1954- Woman seated in an interior; oil on canvas, signed and dated 20, 70x90cm. Note: Bloch was born in November 1883 in Neisse, Silesia/Poland (then Germany). His father owned a lace & linen factory. From 1902 to 1905 he studied architecture and art at the University of Berlin; in 1905 he studied aesthetics in Munich, returning to Berlin in 1907 to attend drawing classes with Lois Corinth. During WW1 he lived in Spain. In 1923 he opened the Bloch-Kerschbaumer School of Painting in Berlin, which became very popular with students from all over Europe. When Kerschbaumer died in 1926, Karl Schmidt-Rottluf took his place. In 1933 he had a disagreement with the Nazi administration over an exhibition and promptly was declared a painter of "Degenerate Art". A year later he was forced to leave Germany and emigrated with his wife and daughter to Britain. In 1947 he became a British citizen. His contact with Wales came about through Josef Herman. Bloch paints painted in Bethesda, North Wales in the 1940s and 1950s. His influences were Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. MARTIN BLOCH Neiße 1883 - 1954 London Bretonische Küstenlandschaft. Oel auf Leinwand. Signiert sowie verso nochmals signiert und ortsbezeichnet "Douarnenez". Auf den Resten eines alten Klebeetikettes auf dem Spannrahmen verso bezeichnet und nicht mehr lesbar datiert "192..". 72,5 x 100,5 cm. Bloch begann seine Ausbildung 1907 als Schüler von L. Corinth und bildete sich autodidaktisch weiter. Er gehörte vor dem I. Weltkrieg zusammen mit R. Levy, H. Purrmann und anderen zum Kreis der von Matisse beeinflussten Künstler des Café du Dôme in Paris. Bedingt durch seine jüdische Abstammung wanderte der Künstler nach England aus, wo er 1947 die englische Staatsbürgerschaft annahm. "Das Frühwerk steht in engem Zusammenhang mit den Fauves und den Brücke-Malern. Thematisch überwiegen Landschaften, Stadtansichten und Stilleben, großflächig, die meist unter Bevorzugung der drei Grundfarben mit breitem Pinsel ausgeführt sind (Saur, AKL, Bd. 11, S. 529).
