Dimensions: 18.6 in x 39.4 in; 47.3 cm x 100 cm Good Condition Estimate: $15,000-$30,000 Provenance: Sovcom Auctions: April 19, 2008, lot 30; Shapiro Auctions: Saturday November 16, 2013 Lot 79. Note: The present lot is accompanied by a certificate of the Federal Research Institute for Conservation - Restoration, M.M. Krasilin, Moscow, July 18, 2007. This seascape painted by Blinov depicts the Russian armored cruiser "Minin." Named after the Russian national hero Kuzma Minin, the ship which was built by Baltic Works, Saint Petersburg between 1860 and 1870 for the Imperial Russian Navy. (Watts, Anthony J. (1990). The Imperial Russian Navy. London: Arms and Armour.) The ship is shown sailing here in the seaport of Kronstadt, which would later be the site of the triumphant raid on Kronstadt when in August 18, 1919 the British Navy defeated the Bolshevik Baltic fleet. (Auckland Star, Volume L Issue 260, November 1, 1919, "Raid on Kronstadt" p. 17) "Minin" was later renamed "Ladoga" in 1909 and reclassified as a Minelayer. The ship was sunk in 1915 after having helped to lay the mine barrier in the gulf of Finland in 1914. (Watts, Anthony J.) Leonid Demyanovich Blinov (RUSSIAN, 1867-1903) While studying at the Imperial Academy of Arts, Blinov was drawn to sea subjects in most of his works. In 1894 he graduated with the title of class artist of 2nd degree and also enlisted for service in the Naval Ministry. He participated in Russian campaigns of commercial and military ships and made three voyages around the world. A memorial exhibition was held in St. Petersburg for Blinov in 1905. Blinov’s works can be found in many museum and private collections throughout Russia. Condition: Craquelure throughout sky and ocean; frame is brand new. Otherwise in overall good condition.
