      Est: €35,000 - €45,000

Signed and dated lower left: J : Biltius. fecit / A. 1672 Jacobus Biltius specialised in still lifes of game and is today best known for his trompe-l'œils, which often depict hunting equipment. Biltius was born in The Hague and worked in Amsterdam, Maastricht, Antwerp, Leeuwarden(?) and Bergen op Zoom. In 1660 he joined the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague, an artists‘ association founded in 1656 by a group of artists who were dissatisfied with the city's painters' guild. Around 1672/73 he became a member of the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp. His son Cornelis continued to produce trompe-l'œil paintings in a similar style, particularly in the German cities of Bonn and Cologne. The tromp-l'œil genre came into vogue when artists such as Philips Angel, Jacobus and Cornelis Biltius and Johannes and Antonius Leemans began to utilise the possibilities of this newly developed genre. The present pair of paintings is an outstanding example of Biltius' pioneering achievement in creating the illusion of three-dimensional objects. The careful rendering of various textures, close attention to the play of light and the placement of shadows are among the most important factors in creating such an illusion and are marvellously illustrated in this pair of hunting still lifes. Pendant to lot 2060.

Hunting still life with a hare, hunting horn, powder canisters and pistols. Canvas. Ca. 1670. Traces of a signature in orange paint underneath in the middle ‘… Biltius…’. Dated on a label on the ebony frame 1651, stylistically more likely originating from the 1670s. Wear marks in the lower part. Jacob or Jacobus Biltius was a Dutch still-life painter originally from The Hague who worked in various places including The Hague, Amsterdam, Maastricht, Antwerp, Leeuwarden and Bergen op Zoom. He was known for his game still lifes, kitchen still lifes and trompe-l'oeil still lifes with birds. By the middle of the 17th century, hunting still lifes had become very popular in the Dutch Republic. As an increasing number of Dutch people had become prosperous, they wished to display in their sumptuous country houses hunting still lifes, which expressed their high social status. Although the frame is dated 1651, this painting most likely originates from the 1670s, when Biltius painted game still lifes more related to the Flemish tradition as he was living in Antwerp by that time. A very similar game still live was sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in 1997, 19.02.1997, lot 38. The background of this piece is painted less delicately than the present piece in which the details of the weaponry and the horns in the background are absolutely stunning.

CertificateWalther Bernt, Munich, 20.8.1968, as Cornelis Biltius (the certificate as a copy).Jacob Biltius was active in The Hague, Amsterdam, Maastricht and Antwerp and almost exclusively painted still lifes, usually with dead fowl or hunting equipment. He often painted his works in trompe l'oeil manner, in which the items appear at first glance to have been hung on a nail before a whitewashed wall. The present work is a fine example of this style. Biltius' son and pupil Cornelis successfully continued in the tradition of his father. We would like to thank Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for referencing Jacob Biltius.

NOTE Biltius created numerous trompe l'oeil compositions dated between 1663 and 1677, which continue to be the pictures for which he is best known. This genre was developed shortly after artists such as Philips Angel, Cornelis Biltius and the Leemans, and Jacobus Biltius, began exploiting the possibilities of these recently developed forms. These two pictures are wonderful examples of Biltius' pioneering achievements in creating the illusion of three dimensional objects. The careful depiction of varying textures and close attention to the effect of light and placement of shadows are among the most important factors in creating such an illusion, and are all admirably exemplified in this pair of dead game pieces. A trompe l'oeil still life of weaponry by Biltius dated to the same year was in the collection of Bill Blass, sold in these rooms on January 22, 2004, lot 22 for $344,000.

16 and 17. NOTES Probably related to the still life artist Cornelis Biltius, Jacobus was born in the Hague, where he remained until 1660. After living in Maastricht, he became a member of the Antwerp guild of painters in 1672. He died in Bergen-op-Zoom in 1681. Throughout his career, Biltius specialised in the execution of still lifes, often depicting dead game, with, as here, a trompe l'oeil effect of showing the subject hanging from a nail against a pale or neutral background, thus emphasising their three-dimensionality. In this pair, he uses the added witty conceit of painting frames into the compositions.
