      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

GIOVANNI BILIVERTI (Florence 1585-1644 Florence) The Presentation in the Temple. Red chalk on cream laid paper. 195x146 mm; 7 3/4x5 3/4 inches. Indistinctly annotated in ink, lower center recto. Provenance: Wolfhart F. Bürgi, Saint-Gall (Lugt 3400, lower right recto); Anton Schmid, Vienna (see Lugt 2330b); Matthew Rutenberg, New York. Biliverti was born as Jan Bilevelt and trained with his father, the Dutch artist Giacomo Giovanni Biliverti (born as Jacob Janszoon Bijlevelt, 1550–1603), a goldsmith and hard-stone carver working for the Medici in Florence. After his father's death in 1603, Giovanni worked in the studio of Lodovico Cardi, Il Cigoli (1559-1613), following him in April 1604 until 1607 to Rome. There he worked in projects approved by Pope Clement VIII. In 1609, Biliverti joined the Medici-sponsored guild of artists, the Accademia del Disegno in Florence. He was employed by Cosimo II de' Medici from 1611 until 1621, as a designer for works in pietra dura. Biliverti's independent career as a painter, begun in Rome with an altarpiece for the church of San Callisto, continued with success in Florence. This was marked by important painting commissions such as the Discovery of the True Cross, 1621, for the church of Santa Croce, the Guardian Angel, 1625, for the Certosa at Galluzzo and, late in his career, the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine, 1642, for the church of Santissima Annunziata. Among his pupils were Cecco Bravo, Agostino Melissi, Baccio del Bianco and Orazio Fidani.

Attributed to Giovanni Biliverti (Florentine, 1585-1644) Head of a Youth in profile looking upwards and to the right

      Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Attributed to Giovanni Biliverti (Florentine, 1585-1644) Head of a Youth in profile looking upwards and to the right oil on canvas, in a simple carved and gilt wood frame h:45 w: 32 cm Provenance: Possibly Arnaldi Collection, Florence, Nos. 217 and 1470 (when paired with the following lot). Acquired in Italy circa 1870 by Henry Riversdale Grenfell (1824-1904), whose daughter Maud Grenfell (1869-1955) bequeathed them to a cousin, father of the present owner. A label on the reverse - probably 19th Century - reads "No. 217/Testa di Giovane/del/Cav-Biliberti No. 1470". Henry Riversdale Grenfell, a Director of the Bank of England and founder of the firm of Morgan Grenfell and from 1881-1883 also the Governor of the Bank of England, is known to have travelled in Italy circa 1870 purchasing works of art from the fortune made from Cornish tin by his grandfather Pascoe Grenfell. There is a line of thought that the old label on the reverse of the present painting, may be that of the Arnaldi collection in Florence. An alternative attribution to Francesco Curradi has been suggested.

THE MARTYRDOM OF A MALE SAINT measurements note 129 by 103mm bears signature in pen and brown ink: Cigoli pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk; a red chalk study of a male nude on the backing sheet PROVENANCE Coccapani Collection, Florence (L.2729) EXHIBITED Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Italiaanse Tekeningen, 1970, cat. no. 83, reproduced p. 78, fig. 59 (as Cigoli) NOTE Miles Chappell has identified the collector's dry stamp, L.2729, as belonging to the Coccapani family, in particular the artists Sigismondo and Giovanni. The collection contained many works by Cigoli and his circle, and almost exclusively Florentine drawings, suggesting it was assembled by a Florentine collector (see Miles C. Chappell, 'On the Identification of a Collector's Mark, L.2729', Master Drawings, vol. XXI, no. 1, 1983, p. 36ff.). Though this drawing was attributed to Cigoli in the 1970 exhibition catalogue, Miles Chappell believes it is by Bilivert, and has kindly pointed out a stylistic comparison with a drawing of Christ carrying the Cross in the Uffizi, inv. no.9610F (see Roberto Contini, Bilivert, Florence 1985, reproduced fig. 26).
