Portrait of Justin Engels, Gera. Circa 1930. Vintage ferrotyped gelatin silver print. 21,2 x 17,5 cm. Flush-mounted to board, photographer's Deutsche Werkbund stamp and numbered twice in pencil on the verso. Aenne Biermann was a self-taught photographer who worked somewhat outside the European avant-garde, although there is a strong modernist feel to her work. Today several of her images have become icons of the New Vision photography. This sensitive portrait of the young son of the pedagogue Martin Engels is reminiscent of a silhouette cutout with its dark tonality and closecut frame. Biermann's photographs were also included in the Film und Foto exhibition in 1929 in Stuttgart. Much of her work was confiscated by the National Socialists and a large number of her prints and negatives are missing. - A few areas of light surface rubbing and small scratches, as well as a few spots of oxidation mirroring, corners slightly bumped, otherwise a fine tonal print in very good condition.
