        Dec. 09, 2023

        BERRY WORLD MAP, 1680

        Est: $6,000 - $9,000

BERRY, William (1669-1708). A Mapp of All the World. Engraved map with original hand color in outline. London: Berry, 1680. 23 1/2" x 37" sheet, 34 1/2" x 48 1/2" framed. THE ENGLISH SANSON, showing England at the height of its Influence at the end of the 17th Century. A fine world map showing all but the eastern coast of Australia, the eastern coast of New Zealand. William Berry's "A Mapp of all the World..." is a copy of the Sanson world map as published by Hubert Jaillot in 1674. Berry has patriotically marked the islands discovered by Drake just off Tierra del Fuego and has added New Albion in the northern part of California, shown as an island ... Berry advertised his two-sheet world map in the "Term Catalogues" for June 1680 and then in the "London Gazette". It was available either in sheet form or to be 'bound in books or pasted on cloath at reasonable rates" (Shirley). Chubb describes Berry as a bookseller, geographer, and engraver, who was active between about 1670 and 1703. His most enduring partnership was with map-maker Robert Morden, and together they dealt in topographical works, prints, maps, charts and globes. Berry corrected and amended a set of maps of the World, described by Nicolas Sanson as here, which were issued separately between 1680 and 1689" as a collection they are known as the English Sanson and are very rare" (Chubb). This densely detailed map shows all of the roads, post roads, cities and market towns throughout England and Wales, with distances between cities marked within small circles along each route. Berry appears to have copied John Adams' more decorative map from 1679. The columns flanking the map identify the county, market day, distance from London, and location on the map of hundreds of cities, as explained in the drape-style cartouche at bottom left. The lovely title cartouche features the Royal coat of arms. This is the second state with the dedication updated to honor William III. Printed on two sheets, joined as issued.

London: William Berry, [c. 1681]. Engraved map on 2 joined sheets, hand-colored in outline, 563 x 888 mm. Light toning, two short tape repairs along lower edge just into image, small chips to corners. Matted and framed. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF SANSON AND JAILLOT'S LARGE 1674 MAP OF NORTH AMERICA, UPDATED TO INCLUDE THE NEWLY CREATED PENNSYLVANIA. "Pennsilvania" is named within the map and colored as a separate colony though no boundary lines are engraved and the name does not appear in the strip title (which is otherwise detailed). This indicates that the map was issued very shortly after the granting of William Penn's land charter in February, 1681. Philadelphia is not named. Burden suggests that this map may have been engraved by Hermann Moll, making it among the earliest examples of his work (Burden II:532). The Berry atlas is very rare on the market and this map equally scarce, only 3 examples have appeared at auction over the last 40 years. McCorkle 680.
