Item Overview

Description

North America Divided into its Principall Parts where are distinguished the severall States which belong to the English, Spanish, and French. London: William Berry, c. 1681. Copper-engraved map on 2 joined sheets, hand-colored in outline, 563 x 888 mm. Very pale even toning, two short tape repairs along lower edge just into image, small chips to corners and 2 to top edge (not crossing neat line), matted and framed.

Large, first edition in English of Sanson and Jaillot's 1674 map of North America, updated to include the newly formed Pennsylvania. "Pennsilvania" is named within the map and colored as a separate colony though no boundary lines are engraved and the name does not appear in the strip title (which is otherwise detailed). This indicates that the map was issued very shortly after the granting of William Penn's land charter in February, 1681. Philadelphia is not named.
Burden suggests that this map may have been engraved by Hermann Moll, making it among the earliest examples of his work. Very rare at auction—as is any separately issued 17th century English-language map of North America. Burden II:532; McCorkle 680.
