Bennett states, in full, 'Many thanks for your letter and the copy of ''Focus''. I like the article, and see nothing in it which ought to be eliminated. But I am bound to say that my gloom about old age is very much less than the average gloom about that affair.' With very light age wear. Together with Edmund Blunden (1896-1974) English Poet. A.L.S., E Blunden, on one side of a plain postcard, Talbot Road, London, n.d. (18th October 1929), to [The Editor?] of The Nation. Blunden informs his correspondent 'There is a poetry book about to appear which I shd say deserves to be considered in my next compendious verse review, if you haven't already disposed of it otherwise' and adds 'It is called Caesar Remembers, by W. Kean Simpson.' Some slight traces of former mounting to the verso, affecting Blunden's holograph address and totally obscuring the name of his correspondent and much of the address. Also including John Masefield (1878-1967) English Poet & Writer, Poet Laureate 1930-67. A.L.S, John Masefield, two pages, oblong 8vo, Abingdon, n.d. (28th September 1961), to Mrs. Harris. Masefield thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues to advise on writing, stating, in part, '... to read much, of all that pleases you, & to write much, in many different ways, but something every day. In reading, it is better to read a good deal of old work, for the faults of old writing will be plain to a reader. It is helpful to read work aloud, & to come to know some few who care for writing, & can occasionally meet, read verses or prose, and discuss the problems that these may raise.' In bold, dark fountain pen ink, Chesterton pens a quotation from Napoleon Bonaparte, 'All European Wars are Civil Wars'. Together with Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) English Novelist. Autograph statement signed, Arnold Bennett, one page, oblong folio, n.p., n.d. Bennett writes, in full, 'Peace is a natural state of man. War is not. The first principle of the universe not only should be, but is, harmony.' Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG to EX, 2 Chesterton and Bennett prepared the statements for publication in the Pax Mundi book; an anthology of sentiments on peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.

BENNETT, Arnold (1867-1931). Autograph manuscript of 'Buried Alive A tale of these days by Arnold Bennett', a novel, n.p., n.d. [1] the title page written in capitals, the text neatly written in Bennett's cursive hand, including emendations of words or phrases on most pages, 211 pages, 4to, tipped into an album, red morocco, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Buried Alive, a romantic fantasy set in London and involving mistaken identities, wills and a court case, was written during Bennett's highly productive autumn and winter of 1, when he also completed The Old Wives Tale, and another short novel. It concludes with the departure of its mysterious painter hero, Priam Farll, for a 'sweet exile' in Algiers with 'the enchantress Alice'. Published in 1908, it was later made into a play (The Great Adventure).

Original blue pictorial cloth, the upper board blocked with landscape design in white and yellow, top edge gilt (spine faded). Red morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: presentation copy to Dr. J. F. Farrar, front free endpaper inscribed, 'To J. F. F. collorator from E. A. B. 11/9/2' -- purchased from Parke-Bernet sale, 10 December 1941, lot 42, $22. Exhibited: The Grolier Club. A FINE PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, inscribed by Bennett to his friend and physician, Dr John F. Farrar. Although published after A Man from the North (1898), Anna was Bennett's first novel, written between 1896 and 1901, with much revision and two changes of title. Like subsequent 'Five Towns' novels, it chronicles the potteries of North Staffordshire -- Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke-upon-Trent and Longton. Dr Farrar was a member of the 'muscial-evenings group' -- in December 1999 Bennett wrote to Thomas Lloyd Humberstone, 'I was up till 1.15 am playing duets with Dr. Farrar. We played four symphonies... two odd movements, and the overture to the Meistersinger. You call this a good evening's work, don't you?' Arnold (1867-1931). Autograph manuscript (unsigned) of an untitled play ['The Bright Island'], in three acts, dated on the first page, '16.1.[19]20' and on the last '18 4.[19]20', approximately 166 pages, 4to, written in ink on recto, including cancellations and emendations, blank leaves; green morocco gilt, by Bagguley. A comedy in which Susan Maddox, 'a Red Cross nurse... a pretty rather flighty society maiden' and her brother, James, 'a naval officer... Good looking, gruff. Ruthless', with progressive ideas from Cambridge, are shipwrecked on the imaginary island of Caspo, peopled with figures from the Commedia dell'Arte such as Harlequin, Pantaloon and Columbine, King Pierrot and the 'subtle, serpentine and unscrupulous' Doctor. The scene is set in the grounds of the royal palace. Bennett uses the play to juggle with certain political and social ideas, and includes jokes about bribery, British justice and especially the British ruling class. At the end of the First World War Bennett was much in demand in the theatre. In 1919 and 1920 he concerned himself particularly with the affairs of the Lyric Theatre at Hammersmith, which he persuaded Lord Beaverbrook to support and where some of the best works of the period were performed. The Bright Island, at first accepted but then declined by the Lyric, was not performed until February 1925, when it was directed by Theodore Komisarjevsky for the Stage Society. Bernard Shaw who in 1924 had called it 'not a play but a libretto' and advised Bennett to put music and dancing into it ('humanity cannot stand 150 minutes unrelieved scoffing, no matter how witty it is') wrote on February 27, 'When I saw the Right Little Bright Little Island on the stage, I found that I was only half right about it. I said that it had the makings of an Offenbachian opera bouffe in it; and I was right. What I did not see was that it had the makings of a powerful serious political play in it', going on to accuse Bennett 'like all inveterate novelists' of not taking the theatre seriously enough. The manuscript was one of fifteen plays included in Sotheby's sale of Arnold Bennett's manuscripts on 25 May 1936 (lot 67), sold by order of Dorothy Cheston with whom he lived from 1923 until his death, and to whom he had bequeathed 47 volumes of his manuscripts, together with his journals and the rights in some of his plays.
