ANOTHER PROPERTY BOATS AT PORBUNDER 36 by 42 in. (91.5 by 107 cm.) Signed and dated in Devanagari lower right Oil on canvas NOTE In the 1970's and 1980's Bendre experimented with his own version of pointillism, this work perfectly illustrates his use of this technique. Although the technique has been adopted from western artistic movements of the 1890's, the inspiration for his work was always drawn directly from the world around him. 'I belong to this earth. I walk on this earth, and I don't think of anything but this earth. Things here are my kind of library, I'm not interested in anything else. As such I don't create dream paintings. Whatever I have experienced in this world I paint. Other things are not important to me.' (Parimoo, 1992) 'With the inclusion of the hues and even the inclusion of the black color which are Expressionist traits, Bendre rather successfully attempted a sort of telescoping of the late nineteenth century French Impressionist style with the German Expressionist style of the second decade of the twentieth century...Langhammer brought into India, Kokoschka's style of panoramic landscapes. Similar hues of color were employed by Bendre to replace the mellow color scheme of the existing Indore school as if to usher in the celebration of the Indian sunshine.' (ibid.)

PROPERTY OF DR. AND MRS. AJIT BANERJEE UNTITLED 31 3/4 by 23 1/4 in. (80.7 by 59.1 cm.) Signed in Devanagari lower right Oil on paper NOTE In 1943 Bendre was hailed by the Times of India as the leading artist of his generation and to his further credit his artistic vision became a driving force for the artists that were to follow in his wake. For a brief period he taught M. F. Husain and encouraged other artists including Ara to continue with their vocation. Ironically as the modernist thrust of the artists that he had taught began to capture the imagination of the Indian art scene his own style began to be overlooked, but in retrospect he must be considered one of the most important Indian artists of the twentieth century.

It is not clear if Bendre ever worked on a similar project for the state of Rajasthan but the current work dated 1944 may be related to an equivalent type of commission. It is known that Langhammer worked in Rajasthan in the 1940's and his paintings of Camels and elphants from this period show striking similarities to this current work.

View of Mandu Signed and dated in Devanagari lower right Oil on canvas 353/4 x 491/2 in. (90.8 x 125 cm.) PROVENANCE Purchased directly from the Artist by the present owner. NOTES Bendre's fascination with landscapes sparked off his artistic career in the 1930's and they remained an important element of his oeuvre. After his move back to Bombay in the mid-sixties, he would continue to travel around the country 'for the satisfaction of his still persistent wanderlust.' (Ram Chatterji, Bendre: The Painter and the Person, Canada, 1990, p. 59.) These trips would allow him to visit new places, thus providing him the inspiration for the landscapes, which was the focus of his work at this time. This painting from 1982 shows the town of Mandu in Madhya Pradesh, and Bendre has captured the flavor of both the architecture and the people. Bendre experimented with his own version of Pointillism in the 1970's and 1980's and this work perfectly illustrates his vision. Pointillism is a Post-Impressionist method of applying color in precise capsule-like 'points' designed to create a specific mood. This painting is a fusion of the Pointillists' unique use of color and the delicate skyline of an Indian village. Like the Pointillists' philosophy, emphasis is not on a naturalistic representation of the landscape, but on depicting a unique visual experience as seen through the eyes of the artist.

A Tribal Weaver Signed and dated in Devanagari lower right Oil on canvas 453/4 x 341/2 in. (116 x 87.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Purchased directly from the Artist by the present owner. NOTES Weaving had a special significance for Bendre, who taught it together with painting and papier mache while in Baroda in the 1950's. He painted several works over the years that depict women engaged in different methods of weaving; from sitting at a loom or behind a spinning wheel. This painting from 1987 shows a young girl sitting at a loom that is typical of the weavers in Arunachal Pradesh. The process of weaving serves as a perfect metaphor for Bendre's sense of 'one-ness' achieved through artistic creation: 'To me creative art demands transforming raw materials from surroundings observed deliberately or by chance into an integrated whole.... The process has purpose and meaning.... All great works of art have abstract considerations at the root of the process, like establishing aesthetically desirable relationships of parts with the whole.' (Narayan Bendre, 'My Painting', Bendre: The Painter and the Person, Canada, 1990, p. 63-64.).

Braiding Hair Signed and dated in Devanagari lower right Oil on canvas 36 1/8 x 47 15/16 in. (91.7 x 121.8 cm.) NOTES Bendre left Baroda in 1966 and returned to Bombay where he would live for the rest of his life. This painting was done shortly after his return, and marks a return to figurative subject matter after a period of abstraction and experimentation with Cubism. At this time, Bendre tended to focus on images of rural women, engaged either in social interactions, or in creative tasks such as painting or playing music. These comfortable domestic scenes were rendered with a minimum of stylization and a preference for two-dimensionality. Unaffected simplicity is the prevalent tone in this picture, where the use of bright colors and deliberate lack of detailing creates a spatial tension and emphasizes rural serenity. There is no modeling or shadow to the figures. Yet, there is some hint at perspective, as the women are solidly placed in the foreground of the encompassing surroundings that form the background of the painting. 'I belong to this earth. I walk on this earth, and I don't think of anything but this earth.... I don't create dream paintings. Whatever I have experienced in this world I paint.' (N.S. Bendre, Drawings and Paintings, New Delhi, Vadehra Art Gallery, 1992.).

Lady Playing a Sitar Signed in Devanagiri lower right Oil on canvas 471/4 x 31 in. (120 x 78 cm.) NOTES In the late 1960's, Bendre often painted images of women reading, painting and playing music. He tended to paint familiar scenes of domestic life with little stylization or modeling. 'I belong to this earth. I walk on this earth, and I don't think of anything but this earth. Things here are my kind of library, I am not interested in anything else.
