        Joseph Boggs Beale (1841 - 1926) "Merchant of Venice" (Act II Scene V - Before Shylocks House - Jessica Throwing Down a Casket From The Window) Gouache on Paper. Born in Philadelphia, Joseph Beale was the great-grandnephew of Betsy Ross. He devoted his career to illustrating momentous events in American history. During the Civil War, he volunteered for service in the Gettysburg campaign in order to make sketches for "Leslie's Weekly" magazine. After the war, he was an illustrator for "Harper's Magazine." He never became very famous. He was a 20th century painter whose art belonged to the 19th century. It was whimsical, imaginative and optimistic in illustrative style and minute detail. Joseph Boggs Beale (1841-1926 ); Philadelphia born artist, illustrator for Harper's, Frank Leslie's Weekly and the Daily Graphic. He enlisted in the 33rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserves - and sent sketches of the battles to illustrated news publications. He also created designs for Magic Lanterns for the firm Caspar Briggs & Sons. More than likely this series of Civil War scenes were created for the Magic Lantern slides.

Note: Known by colleagues as "Professor", Beale worked as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and the Daily Graphic. For Caspar Briggs & Sons he created black and white paintings for the Magic Lantern, a popular Victorian novelty.
