Description

Joseph Boggs Beale (American/Philadelphia, 1841-1926), five paintings from the "Dixie" series including; "Planter's Home", "Slave Quarters", "Master Departing", "Wounded Master Returning" and "Plantation Home Deserted", black and white gouaches, three signed lower center, sight 12 1/2 in. x 12 1/2 in., matted and framed alike with artist and title plaques, (5 pcs.) Note: Known by colleagues as "Professor", Beale worked as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and the Daily Graphic. For Caspar Briggs & Sons he created black and white paintings for the Magic Lantern, a popular Victorian novelty. The paintings offered here may have been commissioned slides for use in the Magic Lanterns.
