    LEWIS BAUMER [British, 1870 - 1963], Miss Ada Reeve, ink and crayon on paper, signed and dated '95 lower left. Baumer was a caricaturist and painter who worked for more than fifty years for the British magazine Punch. Ada Reeve (1874 – 1966) was an English actress of both stage and film. She began to perform in pantomime and music hall as a child and gained fame in Edwardian musical comedies in the 1890s. She and her husband toured Australia in 1897 with J. C. Williamson in 1897–98. She starred as Robin Hood and later Maid Marion in Williamson's pantomime Babes in the Wood, drawing popular and critical praise.

Lewis Christoper Edward Baumer was an English caricaturist who worked for more than fifty years for the Bristish magazine Punch. Baumer was born in London (St John's Wood) and had studied at the St John's Wood Art School, under A.A. Calderon, at the Royal Academy of Arts and, at the Royal College of Art. His first drawings appeared in the Pall Mall magazine in 1893; in 1897, his first cartoon in Punch appeared. In 1921, he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Framed and matted, no glass.22x19x1. Image area 13.50x11.50. Weight to ship 2 pds. PROVENANCE: The Estate of R. John Holmgren, well listed American illustrator and personal friend of the artist. Lewis Baumer was born in St. John's Wood on 8th August 1870. He attended South Kensington School and the Royal Academy School. His early work concentrated on portraits in watercolor, pastel and oil. He began contributing illustrations to Pall Mall Magazine in 1893. Four years later he had his first drawing in Punch Magazine. During the First World War Baumer began contributing to Punch Magazine, The London Magazine, The Bystander, The Strand Magazine, The Tattler, The Idler, The Illustrated Bits, Printer's Pie and The Royal Magazine. Baumer also illustrated several books including The Perfect Gentleman (1912), Vanity Fair (1913), The Complete Sportsman (1914), The Shallow End (1924), Silver and Gold (1925) and Bright Young Things (1928).

    Lewis Christian Edward Baumer, British 1870-1963- "Chelsea Host: Sorry old man, I ought to have told you, we're quite alone- you needn't have bothered to dress yourself up", from the Punch Library, also featured in the Weekend Saturday April 15 1995; pen and black ink, bears inscription in pencil on the mount, 21.5x29.5cm: together with one other pen and ink cartoon of three figures on a pier by a related hand, 16.4x9cm: After Pierre Brissaud, French 1885-1964- "Que C'est Bon! ou Les Boissons Glacees", from Gazette du Bon Ton; hand-coloured lithograph, signed and dated 1921 within the plate, 20.5x15cm (3), (may be subject to Droit de Suite) Provenance: from the Estate of Ronald Dennis Parkinson 1945-2012, he was a prominent art historian, the former head of education and lecturer at the V&A Museum and author of important books on British painting. He compiled the 'V&A's Catalogue of British Oil Paintings 1820-1860' and 'John Constable, The Man and his Art'.
