Few would have guessed that this is an early work, a rare canvas school assignment of metal-parts sculptor Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin. The bony thin-flesh protuberances of the 'lembut' (soft) figure has elongated limbs and torso, to exaggerate the frail emaciated frame. Man is reduced to a crumpled mass, collapsing in what looks like a cold corridor. Why is Man weak, or depicted so? Could this be the genesis of his silat figures, which are however, steady, strong and confident? Raja Shahriman graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1990 and taught at the Malaysian Institute of Art. In 1992, he won the Minor Award at Salon Malaysia. His prolific metal sculpture, Growth with Equity, stands in Taman Wawasan on Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur. Raja Shariman broke the gentility of the Malay psyche when he introduced his Killing Tools steel works to the public in the War Box, Lalang and Killing Tools exhibition in 1996. The harshness in those works was toned down when his ‘Nafas’ exhibition was introduced. Entitled ‘Keganasan’, this work is dark and grim in nature, portraying an overall red environment with a deiform resembling an eye in a distance while chiseled figures are struggling to break free from the ground below. Canvassing through the artwork, one would find a blood moon with a blade stabbed through. One might say that this work is Raja’s interpretation of hell.

RAJA SHAHRIMAN BIN RAJA AZIDDIN (b. 1967) Api, Bayangan & Kemenyan 20, 1997

          Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

This work, from the eponymous Api, Bayangan & Kemenyan solo exhibition in April 1998 looks like some form of symbolic regalia or a candelebra — a far cry from his Killing Tools contraption of spare parts, metal rods and sharp-pointed metal objects. Whereas Killing Tools were rough, crude and menacing, this series exudes grace despite the mythical allusions. It is a study of religion and rituals, an experiential work encompassing the spiritual and conceptual, with ‘Api' (fire) being a source of light shaping space and colours and kemenyan (incense) providing an intoxicating aura or aroma to the bayangan (shadows) formed by the light. On all these are shaped the character, from the viccisitudes of life. In the article, ‘Killing Tools, Dancing Warriors', in the May 2009 issue of NAFAS, artist-critic-curator Nur Hanim Khairuddin views ‘Api, Bayangan & Kemenyan' as an “attempt to reject all figurative references” after appearing to be “imbued with a feeling of guilt of having made human-like statues.” And Raja Annuar of Pelita Hati, which is his sole representative, said: “His commitment in his search of truth, faith and his study of religion and ceremonies related to them, has given rise to this new series.” Raja Shahriman's works cover the spectrum of Nature, Religion and Culture, and are all rooted in Malayness, first captured the imagination with his Killing Tools (1994) in the Killing Tools, Lalang and Warbox exhibition. He used metal scraps for linear anatomical constructs. He had his first solo, Gerak Tempur, in 1996. He enrolled as a painting major at the Mara Institute of Technology but switched to Sculpture in the fifth semester, graduating in 1990. Est: RM50,000 - RM75,000

This 1997 installation work is a precursor to Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin’s much later Gembala foray that looks into the perpetual strife for power as symbolized by the mean-looking throne (complete with spikes and horns) by Man. Pure greed and selfishness and brutality in the execution of the ambition. This is a far cry from his silat introspection in Self. A different side-excursion after his Killing Tools and Gerak Tempur (his first solo, 1996), Raja Shahriman takes a hard look into the symbols of power. He showcased his Gembala series in his eighth solo and ninth sculpture series titled Gembala Mana O’ Gembala at the Pelita Hati Gallery of Art in Kuala Lumpur in 2014. Raja Shahriman made his first installation art in his Diploma show in 1990, and his second entitled Bamboo and Glass was in a two-men show with Kungyu Liew at the MIA Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in 1991. Gembala, which means a shepherd has in the wider context, is a khalifah, a leader, and the thrust is about a crisis of leadership.Raja Shahriman graduated with a BFA, majoring in Sculpture, from the Universiti ITM in 1990. He taught briefly at the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur. He won the Minor Award at the Salon Malaysia in 1991 and the Asia-Pacific Cultural Industry Award in 2009. He was chosen for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia, in 1996. His monumental sculptures include ‘Growth With Equity’, Taman Wawasan, KL, ‘Bumi Penyatuan and Makmur Abadi,’ ‘Wira Perkasa,’ (Perak), and several commissioned for the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum in Pekan. Pelita Hati Gallery organised most of his solos except for Semangat Besi (Galeri Petronas, 2001), and Nafas (National Art Gallery KL and Utterly Art in Singapore, 2004 and 2005).

RAJA SHAHRIMAN RAJA AZIDDIN b. Perak, 1967 NAFAS SERIES, 2003 Metal and brass 45cm x 26cm x 13cm A spiritual sculptor, Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin interweaves "the socio-religiocultural politicity in accordance with his unique elucidation and aspiration" to create three dimensional and tangible metaphysical abstraction. The process of contemplation upon divinity and nature is crucial for his stimulation to create sculptures that "illuminate the essences of 'iman' (faith), 'islam' (submission) and 'ihsan' (excellence and virtue)." Exhibited at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2004, Nafas (Breath) is a body of work created from the notion of it being a "central element that distinguishes human beings from idols" as curator Nur Hanim Mohamed Khairuddin remarked in her curatorial essay titled Nafas Asyik: The Reality of Aesthetically Ecstatic Self. The physical actions of striking, forging and welding metal and brass as well as manipulating the strength of steel with burning fire are performed "to articulate his cravings to attain 'taqarrub' (nearness) to gaze at Divine image." Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin graduated from University Mara Institute of Technology, Majoring in Sculpture in 1990 and taught briefly at the Malaysian Institute of Art. In 1992, he won the Minor Award in the Salon Malaysia. He represented Malaysia at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane in 1996, and received the Asia Pacific Cultural Industry Award in 2009. His monumental metal sculpture Growth with Equity stands in Taman Wawasan in Jalan Sultan Sulaiman in Kuala Lumpur.
