D795 / Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford / 1751-1812/ LGD Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812) was an amateur watercolourist of considerable repute as was his brother the Rev. and Hon. Daniel Finch (1757-1840). His children including the Hon. Daniel Finch were all able amateur artists. Due to the similarity of their names and their style their work can be confused.

    A set of three large leather-bound watercolour folios by Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford (1751-1821) each with embossed family crest to front binding, one depicting forty-five fine and detailed landscape views of Packington Hall, seat of the Aylesfords, and the surrounding areas, including Kenilworth  29 x 38 cm; one dated 1802-3 and including thirty-seven views of Tenby and the surrounding area, 37 x 46 cm; the other including forty-five landscape views of Sidenham, Greenwich, Bridgenorth, Powis Castle, Windsor, Packington etc, 37 x 51 cm (3) Prov: The smaller album was received as a 21st birthday gift from the Countess of Aylesford, the vendor's great-grandmother in 1925, thence by descent. The albums are reunited here for the first time since their dispersal between the family  Note: Heneage Finch was a British politician, before succeeding his title. A notable landscape artist with works in Tate Britain.

    Antike Brücke im Orient mit Hirten und seiner Herde. Feder in Braun. 12,9 x 25,8 cm. Verso alt bez. "By L. Aylesford". Neben seiner politischen Karriere genoss Aylesford hohes Ansehen als Künstler, vor allem seine englischen Landschaften wurden von den Zeitgenossen gepriesen. In der Tate Britain befinden sich 50 Aquarelle, Zeichnungen und Drucke von seiner Hand. Im Jahre 1795 erschien ein Album mit Radierungen von ihm und anderen Künstlern. In vorliegender Zeichnung nimmt Aylesford augenfällig Bezug auf das Werk Lorrains, das in der englischen Kunst zu jener Zeit besonders rezipiert wurde. - Provenienz: Aus der Sammlung John MacGowan (Lugt 1496).

    AT TENBY; A SMITHY; A COTTAGE BY A STREAM AT TENBY; A SMITHY; A COTTAGE BY A STREAM measurements note largest 27.5 by 42 cm., 10 3/4 by 16 1/2 in. three, one inscribed with title on original mount two pen and brown ink with grey wash over pencil and one pen and grey ink with grey wash over pencil, each on laid paper, one watermarked, two with original wash-line mounts with a watercolour of the Falstaff Inn, Canterbury and a brown wash drawing of a Tudor House by the Reverend and Honorable Daniel Finch (1757-1840) Quantity: 5 PROVENANCE Heneage Finch: A Smithy W.Hann NOTE In public life Lord Aylesford acted has a Lord Steward of the Household and Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard, however in private life he was also a talented amateur artist, producing a number of pen and wash drawings and exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1786 to 1790. Another view by Aylesford of Tenby, also inscribed on the original mount, is in the Oppé Collection (see Anne Lyles and Robin Hamlyn, British Watercolours from the Oppé Collection, 1997, p.153). The artist rarely dated his drawings, but often inscribed them with their titles on his own pale pink wash-line borders. Three other views of Tenby are in the British Museum. The drawing by Aylesford of A Smithy was originally part of an album dated 1803.
