NOTE

In public life Lord Aylesford acted has a Lord Steward of the Household and Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard, however in private life he was also a talented amateur artist, producing a number of pen and wash drawings and exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1786 to 1790.

Another view by Aylesford of Tenby, also inscribed on the original mount, is in the Oppé Collection (see Anne Lyles and Robin Hamlyn, British Watercolours from the Oppé Collection, 1997, p.153). The artist rarely dated his drawings, but often inscribed them with their titles on his own pale pink wash-line borders. Three other views of Tenby are in the British Museum.

The drawing by Aylesford of A Smithy was originally part of an album dated 1803.
