        Tony Avenarius (1836 Bonn - 1901 Cologne): Portrait of the Leipzig painter Auguste Dörffling née Böhme (1833 Leipzig - 1868 Zerbst), kneeling, sitting in profile to the left with a Biedermeier pigtail and an open book in her hand, 19th century, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper, mounted on Paper Stamp: Collector's stamp, Lugt no.: 3551. Leipzig. 20th century Date: 19th century Description: Karl Anton Josef "Tony" Avenarius also Toni Avenarius (pseudonym: Antonius Hafermann) was a German book illustrator, graphic artist, draughtsman, composer and librettist. He studied at the academy of arts in Munich and became an assistant in the studios of Gisbert Flüggen as well as Erich Corres. In 1861 he moved to Cologne, where he became the owner of a lithographic workshop. The present sheet is inscribed below the drawing, as well as on the reverse and on the sheet support with the name of the sitter and the artist. On the reverse with collector's stamp initial "I" with owl (Collection Ines Kaps, Leipzig, L3551). DeMille (bookplate, his sale Christie's East, 18 October 1988, lot 229) LITERATURE AND REFERENCES Lipperheide Sl 32 CATALOGUE NOTE First edition of this pictorial celebration of the completion of the Cologne Cathedral, used as a reference work by the director Cecil B. DeMille. The illustrations depict costumed triumphal processions at three moments in the history of the cathedral's construction: the laying of the cornerstone in 1248, the completion of the Choir in 1322, and the beginning of the dome in 1842.
